Gather as much information as possible about your favorite sport. Be it baseball, soccer, basketball or fencing. You should have the rules and regulations of a sport on your fingertips. Not just that, you should also have a good idea as to how these rules can be circumvented. Total expertise is the way to go. This is one of the first and foremost requirements to become a referee.

Training in communication, management, leadership and motivation is essential to become a referee. In addition to that, you must be able to make quick decisions and should be able to hold the reins of the game well in your hand and control it. Thus, being an excellent leader and communicator is going to take you places if you want to be a professional referee.

To get experience in umpiring and refereeing, take initiative to be a referee in your community. Do not expect that you would get an instant breakthrough in the big league. Start small. Local gymnasium training boxers or refereeing for youth sports team can be of great help. If you get lucky, you would probably find youth sports programs providing classes to train referees free of charge. Enroll in as many such classes as you can.

Whenever you preside upon a game, if possible, make sure that your video while umpiring is shot. Take out some time and study your videos to know the difference between your work as a referee and that of others at professional games. Get in touch with experienced referees and ask them to analyze your job as a referee. Work upon the chinks in your armor.

Slowly graduate from a volunteer to a paid community referee by gaining more and more experience and building on the requisite skills. Sometime or the other you are going to get noticed and you are going to strike gold.

These were the things you need to do to become a referee. However, it should not be forgotten that some basic educational qualifications are necessary as well. Maximum officials need a minimum high school diploma or equivalent. Those who are going for refereeing in college, must be aware of the fact that they need to graduate or rather attend a professional officiating team. For instance, if you aspire for officiating minor or major league baseball games, you need to attend professional umpire training school. Moreover, you also need around 10 years of experience of officiating at minor league to be a referee for any major league. Finally, you also need a minimum of 10 years experience to referee for professional football. Out of those 10, 5 have to be at the level of college or higher.
