Becoming a Cop
Many people have a misconception that to become a police officer, you simply need to attend a good police academy, pass the training successfully, and get to work in a police department. Nevertheless, the fact is that becoming a police officer is not so easy, as it is thought of. It consists of rigorous physical trainings and there are many different requirements that you need to meet in order to get into the law enforcement field.
Those thinking of becoming a cop, should understand that there is no such formal education required. However, the basic capabilities to enter into this field are good spoken and written communication skills, analytical abilities, logical thinking and reasoning, good decision-making ability, and most importantly, the will power to eradicate crime from the society. You also need to be mentally and physically fit to even qualify for this job.
For becoming a cop, you necessarily need to have the basic high school education. It is better if you have an additional degree in law or criminal justice, as it will increase your chances of promotions in the department. For getting into the police force, you usually need to be of 21 or more years of age.
Find out what type of cop do you intend to become; such as a sheriff, a state officer, or an investigative police detective. You should remember that if you have been caught for any kind of illegal action or crime in the past, you might not be accepted by the law enforcement department.
The next step is to get an application form from the police department which you intend to work in. You are required to submit a photograph and your fingerprints with the application. After submitting the application, you then need to sit for the civil service assessment, which is regulated by the police department you have applied to.
The department offers this assessment as and when there are police officer jobs available. In order to get an acceptable score in this assessment, you have the option of referring to appropriate guides available in the market. You will then need to undergo a lie detector test and physical examination.
After you successfully get through this assessment, you will be sent to a police academy. At the police academy, you have to undergo training which may range from three months to even a year. During the training period, you have to undergo various physical activities, which will make you fit for carrying out the duties of a police officer. It will also include the study of state regulations, constitutional laws, and fact-finding techniques.
After this training is complete, you are put on a live job. Once you are a cop, you will have to keep upgrading your knowledge base regarding newly adopted laws and regulations of the state. This was the general procedure as to how to become a cop. However, for precise and specified details, it is recommended to get in touch with the police department you want to work with.
