How can I be happy? It is one of those questions that people constantly ask in this fast paced, competitive world. Some attribute happiness with money, while others consider success and fame as the two most important factors that make a person happy. However, gaining material things does not necessarily translate into happiness, which brings us back to the question, how can we be happy. The answer is not very easy as the word 'happiness' cannot be defined or described in a few words. We try and give you a few tips that can guide you as you try to find true happiness in your life.
Several studies have been conducted to observe factors that make people happy. The simple and basic conclusion from all these different studies is that it is important for a person to do what he likes. Though this seems to be the easiest thing to do, in reality, most people find it difficult to do something that makes them happy. In this competitive world, most people are striving and working hard to reach their goal. However, in their journey towards success, one important thing that they leave behind is their ability to enjoy the present. If a person strives to achieve his goal, ignoring his family and friends in the process, there will actually be no one around him at the end, to enjoy his success with him.
DO WHAT YOU WANT
It has been observed that people who do things that they want to do are those who remain happy in life. For instance, opting for a course just because your parents suggested it or taking part in an activity because your best friend is doing it, can make you feel frustrated with yourself, unless it matches your own goals. Hence, it is extremely important to indulge in something that interests you. For this, you have to stop listening to what others are saying and listen to what you think is right for you. Once you find the thing that you like and follow it religiously, nothing can stop you from being happy.LOVE YOURSELF
Though it is important to love and respect our fellow human beings, this love should begin from ourselves. I have seen many people who cannot stop blaming themselves for every wrong thing that happens in their lives. Though this is sometimes important for learning, overdoing it can affect the person's happiness. People should remember that just like all human beings, even they have some strengths and weaknesses which they should know and accept. They should understand that everyone has obstacles and problems in their lives which can be solved by believing in themselves. Loving and accepting themselves as they are, is an important step towards being happy in life.APPRECIATE THE WORLD
One of the main causes for unhappiness around the world is not feeling content with what one has in life. Though it is a good thing to want and get the better things in life, it is also important to stop and appreciate the things you already have. For instance, you may be going through a financial crisis, but rather than cribbing about the lack of money, appreciate the loving family who is your support during this difficult time. Look around and appreciate the things of beauty in your life and you are sure to be happy.RELAX
In this age, when most people have a busy schedule, relaxing and doing things that one enjoys seem to be a difficult thing to do. However, this is very important because hard work may often seem meaningless if it does not afford you the time to enjoy it. Hence, it is very crucial to take occasional breaks from routine work and enjoy the little things. Go on a vacation, read a book, meet a friend, paint, go for a movie, listen to music or just spend some time with yourself. Most people undermine the importance of relaxation in their quest to be happy.FORGET AND FORGIVE
We often blame others for what happens in our lives. Though sometimes this may be true, keeping a grudge against them will not help you in any way. Holding grudges causes not only mental stress but can also have a huge effect on your physical being. Forgiving others will help you feel a sense of relief, and give you freedom from thoughts that have become a burden. Forgive people, spread positive thoughts, and you will surely learn how to be happy again.Happiness is not an unachievable goal. It is not something that is out of our reach but it can often seem so. Being happy is often reflected in the smaller things in life. All we need to do is keep our senses alive and be open to the changes that happen. Appreciate the people in your life, be grateful for the things you have, and be true to yourself. It is like Fredrick Keoing said, "We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have."
