How to Assemble Your New Office Desk

In the market for a new office desk? Already bought one? Make sure assembly goes well with these helpful tips.
First, determine which kind of desk you've got. Most basic office desks will be labeled Ready To Assemble or Flat Packed. These kinds of desks are designed for simple assembly without major tools. Some may snap together without tools at all. If you need tools, generally a small allen wrench or screwdriver piece will be included with the packaging. You'll usually save on delivery costs with ready to assemble desks, because they can be packed into most cars or truck beds.

Larger office desks can come in many forms. They may be already mostly assembled, or arrive in pieces. Before you even open the packaging, you should place the desk where you want to assemble it. It's best to make this an open area that is as close as possible to the place you'll want to put your desk when it's assembled. The less you have to move your desk, the less chance you'll have of nicking or damaging it. If the flooring where you want to work is hard or delicate, it is best to lay down a blanket or furniture pad first - this will protect your desk and the floor.

Open the packaging along its taped edges. Try to avoid damaging the box; if you are missing pieces of your desk or have to send it back for any reason, you'll need it. Unpack and lay out all the pieces that come with your office desk. Check for the assembly instructions you should've received, and compare the pieces with those listed in the instructions. If you are missing anything, you'll be able to figure it out now instead of halfway through the assembly.

Read through the instructions. Even if you don't end up needing them, it's good to make sure there are no tricky steps or pieces that need to be attached before others. Also pay attention to the tool list. To put together a desk, you may need:

- A phillips and/or flathead screwdriver
- A wrench or socket wrench
- A mallet or hammer (for making sure pieces are flush)

If your desk doesn't come with instructions, you may have to use your intuition to put together your desk. The best way to put together your desk is starting backward, with the top of the desktop laid flat on the floor. Your desktop is likely to be the heaviest and most cumbersome piece of the desk, and it's much easier to make sure leg pieces are level and secure when attached without the weight on them. If the leg pieces are especially heavy, you should enlist help holding them steady while you attach them. Alternatively, you can wrap each leg in a towel or blanket so that if it slips, it won't take any dings or scratches. If your desk includes drawers, do not put them in yet.

You may be able to right a light desk yourself. Try turning the desk on its side, and then pulling it up into place. Get help with turning a heavy desk - without help, you might slip and hurt yourself or damage it. To make your office desk easier to move, you can attach furniture glides to its legs. You could also wait to turn your desk, and use a blanket or rug to move your desk very close to where you want to go. Then simply turn and slide your desk into place.
