How to Add Granite Countertops

The first step is to measure. To ensure the best fit, measure the pre-existing countertops with precision. Determine how much of an overhang you would like the granite to have and include that in your measurements. An overhang of 1" to 1.5" is common. Determine which edges of the granite will need to be finished and what type of finish you will want. Select your stone and place your order. Allow a few weeks for granite to be fabricated according to your specifications.

Next, you will need to prepare the cabinets to support the weight of the granite by installing a .75" piece of plywood. Be sure the plywood does not overhang the frame of the cabinets; only the granite itself will do that. Fit the plywood flush to the outer-edge of the cabinet and screw it down into the cabinetry frame, taking the precaution of drilling pilot holes first.

When you have your piece of granite, it is recommended you get assistance in handling it. Granite is not only heavy, but fragile as well. Carefully lay your granite in place and make sure it fits. If there are any areas that need to be trimmed to size, carefully mark where the trimming is needed (a paper template may be useful in getting accurate measurements from actual counter space onto the stone slab). A circular saw with a dry-cut segmented diamond blade can be used to make the trim. Putting duct tape on the base of the saw will protect your stone during the trimming process.

If one of your granite countertops has been fabricated to include a sink hole, lay it in place, and carefully trace the exact dimension of the sink hole onto the plywood support beneath. Remove the granite and cut the plywood with a jigsaw about 1/8" larger than your traced line. Once the hole is cut out of the plywood, drop in your sink, then lay the granite back on top.

Lift the granite countertop and apply a silicone-based adhesive in quarter-sized amounts every 6" along the outer edge of the plywood. If there is a sink, put caulk around the sink rim and in the space between the rim and granite to waterproof the area. Carefully lower granite countertop back into place. Allow the adhesives at least 24 hours to dry before use.
