How I Built my Corner Bookcase

A little tale about how I built the precious little corner bookcase I have in my bedroom. Maybe it can help inspire you to build a corner bookcase of your own.
I have a large corner bookcase in the bedroom of my house and I often get remarks about it. It is an oak corner bookcase and it is painted with a mural of a cityscape, the Boston cityscape in particular, and I built it with my own two hands. I’m a bit of an artist and a woods crafter you see, I love working with raw materials and putting them all together to make something new and dynamic. I’m a bit of an amateur but with my corner bookcase you might say I got lucky because it did come out pretty good.

Why am I rambling on about this corner bookcase I built a long time ago? Well, in this article I just wanted to go over some of the basics about why I decided to build that corner bookcase and how I ended up getting started building it.

The idea came to me when a friend of mine asked those very questions because they were in need of a bookcase of their own because they had only recently moved into the neighborhood and they didn’t want to waste their time browsing stores and online auctions to find the perfect bookcase. So, I helped them out and I figured I might be able to help out some of you internet viewers as well.

So, how did I come to decide I wanted to build my oak corner bookcase? I was sitting around my apartment one day while reading a nice book and I realized that my bookshelf on the wall was over flowing. It could barely take the weight of all the college textbooks and works of great literature that I had collected over the years so I needed a new one to diversify. I needed something small because my apartment wasn’t that big at the time, and I wanted something unique.

I went out to go and buy a bookcase but sadly everything I found was boring and dull. I suppose I could have purchased one and then painted over it but what would have been the fun in that? I decided I should just build one.

After making the final decision I drew up some blueprints. It was going to be a little cubby style corner bookcase that would sit by the television in the corner of the living room area. It didn’t need to be fancy but I wanted it to be sturdy so I picked a good solid wood: oak. I found the wood at the hardware store and had them cut it to some specific measurements. Then it was simply a matter of putting it all together.

Wait, let me back track a little bit. Before I put the pieces together I wanted to paint out the Boston cityscape. Don’t ask me what for, I just liked it. So I printed out a stencil that I found online and laid out the pieces on a work bench so that I could paint on them as if they were a canvas. Once I had completed the painted, I put all the pieces together and viola: a beautiful corner bookcase.
