How Honda became the Forerunner in Pakistan’s Car Market
The launch of Honda's popular models the Civic and Accord created quite a buzz and changed the face of the auto industry forever.
When Honda was launched, the car industry in Pakistan was dominated primarily by Toyota, which had several well-established models like the Crown, Corona, Corolla, and Mark II suitable for a wide variety of consumers and budgets. Mazda, Nissan and Suzuki were inconsequential competitors and had a few models in the market but lagged considerably in terms of brand loyalty and market share. Most cars in each class had similar features and had little to offer in terms of luxury.
Upon the introduction of Honda into Pakistan’s auto industry, car buyers could attain quality and luxury at slightly higher prices. The Accord and Civic both had classier designs and a more attractive look that were distinctly different to the shapes obtainable in the market. Features and trims like power windows and extra map reading lights made these cars extremely desirable for people who could afford to spend a little more. Companies that once preferred Toyota for their executives were now herding to purchase Honda.
Honda managed to stay a few steps ahead of the competition by producing outstanding exterior and interior designs with each of its models. Each year saw additions in trims, features and superb quality. The interior was larger and more comfortable providing an enjoyable travel experience both within and between cities. Honda began catering to each of the consumer brackets, maintaining it’s well established high end image and quality. It launched the City, with a smaller engine capacity of 1300cc comparable to that of the lower end Corollas and began local manufacturing to better control pricing.
The handling and performance of Honda cars were a notch above cars by other manufacturers. The engines were carefully engineered with efficient fuel economy, and each model made its driver feel like they were driving a bigger car than its class. Honda quickly proved to be a low maintenance, highly durable car and apart from oil changes and minor tune ups there was little else to be done. These qualities made Honda a highly desirable used car and with the rise in demand for all its models, its resale value was soon comparable to those commanded by the market leader, Toyota.
Honda has succeeded in selling cars that are far ahead of the competition, year after year. It’s introduction of large windshields, unique safety features and improved engines and a dramatic design have helped Honda sustain it’s lead in the industry over time. The thorough and robust manufacturing has made them the main choice for used car purchasers. In spite of the introduction of new models by numerous other car makers, Honda it seems will not be handing over its leading position anytime in the near future.
