How Electronic Cigarettes Work

Electronic cigarettes have become increasingly popular, not only for health reasons, but more importantly for their cost-effectiveness. This article discusses the working mechanism of electronic cigarettes.
In case you are having a hard time to quit smoking cold turkey, then you can make the job easier by opting for electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes. These products are newcomers in the cigarette industry, and perhaps, among the amazing inventions of science. These cigarettes work by providing the user with vaporized doses of nicotine, that is similar to that of traditional cigarettes. As the name suggests, these products are not associated with any smoke and no harmful chemicals, unlike traditional cigarettes. And that is why they are also known as smokeless cigarettes. Also, you have the freedom to use these odorless products anywhere. Initially you may have to pay a good amount for buying an electronic cigarette, but as you go on using them, you would realize that they are in fact a lot cheaper than your traditional smokes.

Working of Electronic Cigarettes

To understand the functioning of an e-cigarette, you got to know about the different components of the device. Generally all of them consist of three main parts. These include a rechargeable battery, a cartridge that contains the nicotine, and an atomizer (heating element).

Battery
The battery that is employed to power the heating element is a lithium-ion rechargeable one, that is used in almost all of these products. The type and size of the battery, determines its life, and so does the frequency of use. Also, this component is known to be the largest of all in the cigarette.

Cartridge
This part is an amalgam of the mouthpiece of the cigarette and a storage place for the nicotine solution, also known as e-liquid or e-juice. Tobacco, menthol, cherry, vanilla, etc., are the different flavors of cartridge which are available for consumers to buy. Also, people can also decide the level of nicotine they would like to go for. The levels include zero, low, medium and high. The solution is generally a blend of water and propylene glycol. The flavors are additional ingredients, and of course there is nicotine as the main ingredient.

Atomizer (Heating Element)
This is the most important part of an electronic cigarette, as it is responsible for converting the nicotine liquid into vapor. This piece is said to have a life span of about a month, after which, it needs to be replaced.

Now I would tell you how the whole system works. It is pretty simple. In a model which is automated, there is a sensor built-in the device. So once the user inhales through the device, the sensor detects the air flow and triggers the heating element. Once this is done, the nicotine liquid gets converted into vapor and finally inhaled by the user.

In an e-cigarette that is driven manually, the user has to press a button that would work to set off the heating element. The liquid is then converted into vapor and the user inhales it. Most of these devices also contain additional circuitry that activates an LED that simulates the red glow of a real tobacco cigarette.

So this is how an e-cigarette works. And before I conclude, here are some names of some of the top rated electronic cigarettes on the market.
