Once you have people on your contacts, you can begin to send instant messages. To message someone, go to the desired contact and click "Start Conversation". Type the text and press "Enter". To put your BlackBerry on vibration mode click "Ping Contact". To reply to a message click "Wheel" and then "Reply". You can also add an additional chatter to your messaging conversation, just click "Track Wheel" and then "Invite".

Set your Status
With the latest BlackBerry technology you can also do some changes in your availability status. You need to set your status to "Available" if you want to receive messages or notifications. If you don't want to be disturbed you can set your status to "Unavailable", this way you cannot receive notifications. BlackBerry also updates your status automatically. You will see a "Busy" icon when the message recipient is busy in another activity.
