How Does Acupuncture Using Lasers Work?

Acupuncture is definitely catching on in the United States. Although the research that scientists think needs to be done before we can embrace the miracles this treatment has brought about hasn’t happened yet, many people are looking at the results others have had using it and come to accept it on its own merits. Would you believe, though, that even as we’re just on the beginning edge of accepting acupuncture, the process used in the therapy is going to change.

Modern medical science has decided that the ancient therapy needs to be brought up to date by adding lasers to the process. Acupuncture has never been an easy technique to master, and this new twist only makes it more difficult. Can we really improve upon a technique that has taken the Chinese centuries to perfect? That remains to be seen, but this article will tell you some of the reasons that doctors feel the change is necessary.

One possible theory of why American doctors are choosing to add lasers to acupuncture is that because they are able to be more accurate with them. It is extremely difficult, when manually sticking needles into a person’s body, to exactly duplicate a procedure over and over. Doctors hope that by using lasers they’ll be able to complete the process more accurately.

With the addition of lasers and computers to the procedure, the proper spot to stick the needle into can be determined each and every time. Lasers can be adjusted for use on anyone’s body. Since every body is different, this can be extremely beneficial. In addition, the entire acupuncture therapy can be completed much faster with lasers.

Dissention between Tradition and Modern Science

As you would expect, traditional acupuncture practitioners are adamantly against the inclusion of modern lasers in this ancient procedure. They say the two should never have been mixed. On the other hand, there are many people who have believed in acupuncture for years who like the things that lasers are doing in making acupuncture quicker and more precise, especially since growing numbers of people are now taking an interest in the therapy.

Detractors believe that there are too few people in the United States that are masters of the acupuncture process to try and make the procedure even more complicated that it already is. They are worried that the traditional techniques will be lost or misused.

Someday we’ll have enough data to determine if lasers really helped the acupuncture procedure or not. In the meantime, it’s pretty much up to each of us as to whether we believe in the traditional method or like the laser concept.
