The USB port of the computer helps in faster data transfer than the serial port. The operating system detects the USB pen drive immediately and a new drive is automatically created in your computer. You can view the newly created drive on your computer. The pen drive is accessed from an icon created in your 'My Computer' section on the computer. You can now transfer data, songs and videos to or from the computer. When the transfer is completed, you should disconnect the pen drive from the computer. Pen drive has a flash memory and the type of memory is EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory).

The greatest advantage of a pen drive is its size and portability. The small size of the pen drive and the amount of data that can be accommodated in a pen drive are not comparable to any other storage device.
