How Do You Write a Poem
"So, how do you write a poem about yourself, or any other subject?" Denise asked me the other day. I said...

Tips on How to Write A Poem
As I have said earlier, writing a poem does not cater to the needs of any rules or regulations. So what I have presented below, are not rules as such, but some tips to give you a little push to begin this interesting form of writing, and nurture it as a hobby.
Tip # 1
Well, the first important and the most obvious ingredient that you would require to begin a poem is the idea of something that inspires you. Now what could be the inspiration, it depends on your perspective. For some, it may be a person, for some it may be a place. The idea may be obtained from tiny gravels of sand getting washed away by the waves, to the intense excitement of standing at the summit of a mountain.
Tip # 2
Once you know what you wish to write the poem on, decide in what way you would like to describe it. For instance, if you are writing a poem dedicated to your favorite place, you may start by describing about its beauty, and how it made you feel at that moment. Something like...
"Wow, what a place, so silent and so serene
Never felt so light and happy to see beauty I have never seen..."
Tip # 3
Now here comes another question "How do you write a poem that rhymes?". Rhyming can be a difficult part, while it can be easy too. What I feel is, the rhyming must be in sync with what the line is trying to express, keeping in mind the context of the poem. For instance, if we consider these two lines...
"I felt your warmth, I felt your love
Then came the cuckoo and then came the dove!"...
Now these lines sure rhymed, but are not reconciling with each other. So when you wish to give your poem a rhyme, do not get swayed away from the theme of the poem.
Tip # 4
Creativity helps to light up your poem, and gives it a sense of depth and character. Literature works such as poems always provides you with an opportunity to make good use of symbolism, analogies, and metaphors, etc. And one of the best ways to be creative is to pour out your emotions.
Tip # 5
One important tip, which I would like to share with you, is about the usage of words. It feels great to know and use sophisticated words. But what I believe is, being simple is being beautiful. Try to use the simplest of words in your poems, but do make smart use of adjectives and adverbs. For instance, instead of writing 'delicious', try putting it as 'irresistibly delicious'. The motive behind using simple words is to help your poem reach out to other people. And as you may suppose, most people would easily understand the word 'bold' instead of its synonym 'brazen'.
Tip # 6
And lastly, do not hesitate to share your work with others. If you have written a poem for the first time, then the best people to share it with would be your family. And equally important is to celebrate any appreciation, and to grow from criticism.
And that brings to the end of what I discussed with my friend when she asked me 'How to write a poem?' To repeat what I have said earlier, these tips are only for your guidance, and not to be referred to as rules about writing a poem. So, just grab a pen and a paper, do not think much, and just let your emotions be in charge. Best of luck!
