How Could You Have Known
(I didn’t write this from experience, only what I thought would happen). This is a poem about a mother who blames herself for her son's death.
How could you have known
That while you were partying
I was at home
Worrying about you.
How could you have known
That after 5 or 6 beers
It wasn’t safe to drive.
How could you have known
Something you did not learn,
Something I did not teach to you.
How could I have known
That what I did not teach you
Would cost you your life
If I knew what I know now,
I would know that it’s better to
Teach you not to drink and drive
Before you feel the need to do it.
If only you knew
That you would not have died,
If you hadn’t of been drunken while driving.
I blame only myself,
For not raising you right,
And now I will never be able
To teach you right from wrong
That while you were partying
I was at home
Worrying about you.
How could you have known
That after 5 or 6 beers
It wasn’t safe to drive.
How could you have known
Something you did not learn,
Something I did not teach to you.
How could I have known
That what I did not teach you
Would cost you your life
If I knew what I know now,
I would know that it’s better to
Teach you not to drink and drive
Before you feel the need to do it.
If only you knew
That you would not have died,
If you hadn’t of been drunken while driving.
I blame only myself,
For not raising you right,
And now I will never be able
To teach you right from wrong
