How Could Identity Theft Affect Me?

Can identity theft impact you, or is it just a big hype?

A person's identity is a fundamental part of their life, as this identity and the ability prove it is essential to a number of important activities such as setting bank accounts, credit cards, loans, hire purchase agreements and even traveling in and out of the country. Without any identity documents you may have trouble doing even the simplest tasks, such as renting a house or registering with the local doctors surgery. Because this identity is so important it is sought after by fraudsters, who can steal your information and use it to commit any number of unlawful activities including:

-Fraudulently applying for credit, benefits, goods or services
-Tax evasion
-Illegal immigration
-Debt avoidance

If your identity is stolen it could effect you in a number of different ways, from damaging your good name (making it difficult to credit), to leaving you with massive charges or debts run up fraudulently in your name. Identity theft could also see your personal information used by criminals to mask their true identities, which could leave you legally liable for any charges recorded falsely in your name. This type of identity theft crime can have a very damaging effect on victims, as even when the problem has eventually been resolved and the charges dropped, it can be very difficult to get your name erased from criminal registers, which may make it difficult for your to get certain jobs or even visas to travel to certain countries in the future.
