Hometown - Chapter 8

Really short, I know! Sorry!
I know. You want to know what happened in the shower, don't you? Well, the answer to that question is nothing. Trust me, I'm even more disappointed than you. He actually talked about all of his marriage's problems. I'm sorry if you've been reading this story in anticipation of Robert and I running away together, totally carefree.

I know I've made it seem like I hate Cynthia... But the truth is, all of my anger was just jealousy. When Robert told me Cynthia wanted to try again, I knew if he left her, she probably wouldn't be able to move on. Cynthia is extremely dependent on everyone. When they broke up in high school (granted, it was for half a week) she tried to commit suicide. She's much stronger than that now, but she would be depressed.

"Want to try to go to work today?"Robert asked.

"NO! YOU CAN'T LEAVE ME HERE ALL ALONE!!"Mrs. Morry yelled from the kitchen, where she sat and ate a brown banana. She claimed that they tasted too much like strawberries when they were yellow. Of course, when they were green (or had the slightest tint of green) they tasted like pineapples. According to her, bananas only taste like bananas when they're beginning to rot.

"Nah, but I'll go for a drive."I responded, as a genuine smile crept across Robert's face. This would be the first time we'd be leaving Mrs. Morry since last Saturday. Its Thursday. I have no idea how Jim managed to live with her.

Robert grabbed his keys off the counter and yelled, "We'll be back soon! If you need anything just call, my number is on the board!!"

"I'm sorry I kept talking about Cynthia last night. I shouldn't have bothered you with all that. I just.... There's so much on my mind, and I just don't know what to think anymore."

"Take your time to decide what you're gonna do. Don't worry about it too much, ok? If you and Cynthia were meant to be--"

Then I stopped. I've been sitting in an old woman's house for the last 4 weeks. This is the first time I've ever driven by a building turned completely black from fire. I wouldn't even know it was the Dairy Queen if I hadn't driving by the half completed building every morning before work.

It was completely deserted. I doubt anyone had done anything to it since they found it burning, and put out the fire. The cause was still unknown, but all the construction crew had come back from Topeka, except for Jim and 3 other men.

The building (or what remained of it...) passed quickly, and we approached my apartment.

"I was just thinking, and if you wanted to bring something from home, since we're going to be staying with Mrs. Morry."

"Jim said he's coming home Sunday..."I answered.

"That's when the rest of the men are coming home."

They were 99% sure it was Jim. They said, "It's either Jim, or someone from Chase. At this point it could be anyone, but it's most likely Jim. Just because he pleaded innocent doesn't mean he didn't commit arson."

Everyone in Chase was waiting on the edge of their seats, crossing their fingers every time a plane passed overhead.

Especially Robert and I. The chances of my sanity remaining intact by the time Jim returned were 10,000 to none.
Jim ?
Innocent
Guilty
