Homemade Toothpaste

There are numerous benefits of homemade toothpaste, the main one being that we can prepare it as per our own dental specifications. Read on to learn a few homemade toothpaste recipes.
Homemade Toothpaste
Decades back, when there were no toothpastes, tooth-powders, mouth washes, etc., people resorted to using natural substances to maintain overall dental health. When there were no brushes available, people would use Neem/Meliaceae/Azedarach tree sticks to brush their teeth with. Wash the stick, chew on it till it becomes soft and stranded and your natural-one-time-use toothbrush is ready. Chewing on a neem stick would cause beneficial nutrients to enter the digestive system and brushing with it would whiten teeth and prevent/heal gum problems.

As kids, many of us would hate brushing our teeth, only because we would dislike the smell or the taste of the toothpaste. Though everyone's teeth texture is same, the problems faced by all are not. One person may have a tooth decay problem while someone else may face gum problems. Ready-made toothpastes that are available in the market claim to be effective for all dental problems, however, very few can find a toothpaste that suits their dental needs. Isn't it better if we can prepare our own toothpaste at home to solve our dental problems? Below are a few recipes to make homemade toothpaste.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe No.1
This is the most common and easy way of making homemade mint toothpaste. Take 6 teaspoons of baking soda, add 1/3 teaspoons of salt, 4 teaspoons of glycerin and 15 drops of peppermint extract. Mix it well to form a thick paste just like a toothpaste and store it in a container.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe No.2
This toothpaste is beneficial for sensitive teeth and gums. Take 1/2 cup cosmetic clay white and add 1/2 cup glycerin, 35-40 drops of myrrh, 7-8 drops of peppermint and 7-8 drops of clove essential oil. Mix the contents well and store it in a container.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe No.3
Take 3 tablespoons of baking soda and 1/2 small packet of stevia powder in a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 20-25 drops of peppermint oil (start by adding half the amount and gradually go on adding up to the point you find is suitable for you). Mix the ingredients well and store in a container.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe No.4
This toothpaste recipe works well for curing periodontal diseases (disease that affects tissues that surround and support the teeth). Take 1/4 cup white cosmetic clay in a bowl and add 1/4 cup baking soda, 1/8 cup finely ground sea salt, 20 drops tincture of myrrh, 8 drops tea-tree essential oil, 8 drops thyme essential oil, 1/2 cup vegetable glycerin. Mix it well and store in a cool and dry place away from bright light.

Homemade Toothpaste Recipe No.5
Take 1/2 cup baking soda in a large bowl and mix 1/2 teaspoon sea salt, 6 packets of stevia or xylitol sweetener, 1/2 teaspoon borax (20 Mule Team Brand), 2 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide 3%, 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 4 drops frankincense oil, 4 drops cinnamon cassia oil, 30 drops peppermint oil. Process all ingredients in a blender until the mixture appears slightly foamy. Store the paste in a clean container.

If you have noticed, the common ingredients in almost all recipes are baking soda, glycerin and peppermint oil. Baking soda whitens teeth as well as forms the base of the recipe whereas the thickness of the toothpaste can be altered by the use of glycerin and peppermint oil adds flavor to the toothpaste. Instead of using peppermint oil every time, you can also opt for spearmint oil, cinnamon oil, anise oil, wintergreen extract and clove oil.

Another important benefit of homemade toothpaste is that it saves a lot of money. Homemade toothpaste is inexpensive compared to factory-made toothpastes that contain unnecessary chemicals, flavors, colors, etc., that are in no way useful to us and yet, every time we buy them from the stores, we are paying for that unnecessary stuff. Homemade toothpastes have proved to be more effective for proper dental care than the normal toothpastes from stores.
