How to Make Onion Rings at Home

Recipe # 1

Ingredients
  • Large Onion 1
  • Sifted Flour 1 cup
  • Salt 2 teaspoons
  • Baking Powder 1½ teaspoons
  • Egg 1
  • Milk 2/3 cup
  • Vegetable Oil 1 tablespoon
  • Oil for Frying
Method
  • Peel the onion and slice it into slices ¼ inch thick.
  • Put the onion rings in a bowl of ice water and let it stand for half an hour.
  • Remove the onion rings from the water, place them on a paper towel and let them dry.
  • In a bowl, sift together flour, salt, and baking powder and set aside.
  • Beat the egg yolk and add it with milk and vegetable oil to the flour and mix well.
  • In a separate bowl beat the egg white till it is stiff.
  • Fold the egg white into the batter.
  • Heat the oil for frying, dip the onion rings in the batter and carefully put them in the hot oil and fry till golden brown in color.

Ingredients
  • Canola Oil 3 tablespoons
  • White Onions large 3
  • Egg 1
  • Buttermilk ½ cup
  • Cayenne Pepper ¼ teaspoon
  • Salt ½ teaspoon
  • Freshly Ground Pepper ½ teaspoon
  • All-Purpose Flour ¼ cup
  • Toasted Wheat Germ 1 cup
  • Bread Crumbs 1 cup
  • Dried Marjoram 1 teaspoon
  • Dried Oregano 1 teaspoon
  • Dried Basil 1 teaspoon
Method
  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit while you are preparing the onions.
  • Cut the onion into thick rings and separate the rings with your fingers.
  • In a bowl mix egg, buttermilk, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper till they are well mixed.
  • Now add the flour and mix well, so that there are no lumps.
  • In a different bowl, mix wheat germ, bread crumbs, marjoram, oregano and basil together.
  • Spray the baking sheet with some oil.
  • Toss the onion rings first in the batter and then in the bread crumb mixture, till the rings are well coated.
  • Place the rings in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  • Place the baking sheet in the oven and let the onion rings bake for 15 minutes, till the rings are golden in color, however, they should not be brown.
  • You will have to turn the rings once in the baking process.
  • Remove the rings from the oven and sprinkle salt on them and serve hot.
If you are wondering about the nutrition value of the onion rings, then let me tell you, it will depend on the procedure you will implement to make the onion rings. If you use deep frying method as compared to the oven method, it is but natural that the rings will be oily. You can place them on a paper towel and soak out the excess oil.
