Home Security Risks: Why Your Home Could Be Attractive to a Burglar

This article outlines an interesting experiment: break into your own home to see how vulnerable it is. It also outlines some interesting methods you may not have thought of.
Can You Break into Your Own House?

Did you take a walk yesterday and forget to lock your door? Did you leave your window open last night while you were sleeping? Thirty five percent of home burglaries occur because a home owner left a window or door unlocked.

Have you broken into your house before when you forgot your house key? Did you open that unlocked bedroom window, take off the screen and easily climb through the window? If you have broken into your house, then you already know your home is at risk for a burglary to happen. Home security could be the answer to your problems.

Here are the key signs burglars look for when scoping out a house to rob:

• Unlocked or broken doors or windows - Burglars can simply walk right into your house
• Flimsy door locks - Double keyed deadbolts work the best to keep burglars out of your home)
• Unsecured shed or garage - Easy for burglars to steal cars and equipment
• Sliding glass doors - Easy to lift out of the door frame
• Glass windows in front doors - Burglars smash glass and simply open the door
• Overgrown bushes and trees near homes - Easy for burglars to hide and allows burglars easier access to windows
• Dark, unlit homes - Burglars won’t attempt to break into a house with flood lights surrounding the house
• Overflowing mail box or piled newspapers in your driveway - Signals you aren’t home
• Spare keys hidden in a nearby flower pot, window ledge or under a door mat - Burglars are more clever than you realize
• Low fences - High fences will deter burglars
