Home Security for Renters

Just as security is important to a homeowner with a family, security should also be important to a renter of an apartment or condo.
Even if you live on the second, third, or even higher floor of an apartment complex, that does not mean you should throw home security out the window. Remember, if a thief is desperate enough, he will do anything to get into your home and steal what’s yours. Just as security is important to a homeowner with a family, security should also be important to a renter of an apartment or condo.

There are several options you have as a renter when it comes to home security systems. You can go with a professional security company, your cable, phone, or broadband provider, or you can buy a do-it-yourself home security system. It all depends on how much security you want and how much you would like to spend.

Professional Security Companies

Professional security companies usually offer a combination of home security system installation and monitoring. This route is often the more expensive one. If you choose to go with a security company, often they will provide a basic wired or wireless alarm system for free if you agree to a contract to pay a monthly fee for a home alarm monitoring company. This way, if your alarm is activated, a monitoring company is called who will then call the police if needed.

Your Cable, Phone, or Broadband Provider

Some cable, phone, or broadband providers offer renters convenient home security systems that go along with the traditionally provided services. This is a fairly new concept. Time Warner offers this feature in select cities and uControl, Inc. is an Austin, Texas based company that is starting to team up with cable, phone, and broadband companies to offer their own security system or a system that integrates DSC, Honeywell, General Electric, or Bosch products. The difference is this kind of provided system will communicate over three redundant connections - cellular, broadband, and telephone line. This enables customers to control and monitor their alarm systems from mobile telephones, other mobile devices, or the internet. Some can even turn the device on or off using their TV remote control.

Do-It-Yourself Security Systems

Another effective way to secure your home is by buying a do-it-yourself security system and installing it yourself, therefore saving you money. Alarm kits can cost as low as $99 and are offered wired or wireless. Wireless home security systems are easier to install and also easier to dismantle and take with you, should you decide to move. These systems can be set to sound an alarm, call you, or even call a monitoring service when prompted. You can also buy add-ones, including smoke and flood detectors.

Other ways to protect yourself and your property while renting is to simply lock your door and always know who is knocking on your door before you open it. Being social with your neighbors also helps. This way they can keep a watchful eye over your place when you are gone or become concerned when you don’t keep up with your daily activities. You also have the option to get a pet that can alert you and others of an intrusion. You’ll want to leave a light or TV on when you leave your apartment or condo. And finally, be sure to buy renter’s insurance. This way you are protected financially if your home is broken into.
