The cause of yeast infections is a fungus named candida albicans, which thrives in the genital region of human beings. Probiotics
Probiotics are the live, friendly bacteria which are naturally present in the digestive tract as well as vagina. These bacteria are very effective in suppressing the harmful candida. Probiotics are found in the foods such as curd, yogurt etc. The probiotic that is particularly helpful in suppressing the growth of candida is lactobacillus. It blocks the growth of candida inside the vagina and thus prevents the infection.

Boric Acid
Boric acid has mild anti fungal and antiseptic properties which are helpful in preventing various types of infections. Boric acid suppositories are available at the pharmacy shop and are effective in treating candida. However, boric acid is not to be taken orally or applied directly on the skin, due to its toxic properties.

Tea Tree Oil
Teat tree oil contains a compound named, terpinen-4-ol , which is supposedly effective in treating candia. Tea tree oil is to be diluted and then applied topically in the vagina. Another method of using tea tree oil for curing yeast infections is by douching with it.

Garlic Oil
Garlic is one of the most common home remedies for yeast infections. Although, some people douche with it, it is not a good option, as it may cause vaginal burning or irritation. Taking garlic oil internally is a good way of curing yeast infections.

Vinegar
The purpose of douching with vinegar is to introduce fresh cultures of yeast inside the vagina. This helps to suppress the growth of candida.

Tips for Preventing Yeast Infections
  • Hygiene is of utmost importance for curing yeast infections. Hence always make sure you are following basic hygiene
  • Shower frequently and change your underwear as many times as possible.
  • Use a hair dryer on 'cool' setting to blow dry the area. Wet, humid conditions provide a favorable atmosphere for candida.
  • Do not indulge in sexual activities unless you completely get rid of the infection.
  • Avoid salty, spicy or over processed food. These foods accelerate the growth of candida.
  • If you are a diabetic, then get a proper control over it, because diabetes is one of the main causes of yeast infections.
  • If you are on a long medication of antibiotics, then consult your physician for alternative medicines, because antibiotics and yeast infections have some relation. Antibiotics provide food for the fungus and help it to multiply.
The efficacy of home remedies for yeast infections is not yet proven satisfactorily. Hence, it would be wise to rely upon the conventional medications for treating yeast infections.
