Home Painting Techniques
Home painting is the easiest way to improve the appearance of your house. Here, we have shared with you some home painting techniques that will make the task much easier for you.
Exterior Home Painting Techniques
Before you start applying any paint on the interior or the exterior walls, you have to prepare the surface of the wall. Remove all those objects like screens, lighting fixtures etc., on which you do not want to apply paint. Those objects that cannot be removed should be covered up with plastic sheets.
Exterior paint adheres to the wall surface well if the surface is slightly rough. Therefore, sand the glossy surface using a sandpaper. It is also done to remove the loosely bound paint from the surface. Then wash the surface thoroughly to get rid of the dirt and grime.
Check out carefully if you find any damage, and then repair it. Patch up all the small holes and cracks of the surface. Seal up all the joints where the trim meets the siding with a good quality caulk which is suitable for an exterior surface. If there are some dark stains that cannot be hidden by paint, cover them up with stain blocking primer.
Once the surface is ready, you have to apply primer first. The kind of primers to be used depends upon the kind of outer surface you have. In other words, there are separate primer paints for wood, metal, stucco, etc. After applying the primer, wait for some time so that it dries up completely.
Finally, it's time to apply the exterior paint. Usually, two coats of paint need to be applied to obtain the best results. In case you have wood siding, you should apply the paint with the help of a brush. For any other surface you should use power sprayers. It helps to finish off the work very fast with accuracy.
Interior Home Painting Techniques
To start with, pour the paint from all the cans in a large container and mix them up very well so that the room gets a consistent color on all the walls. Your paint for the home can be a water-based paint or oil-based too. You have to add paint thinner into it in such a way that you do not end up making the paint too thin and or else you may require some additional paint to thicken it up. The task of interior home painting should start from the ceilings then you move down for home wall painting. Ceilings are done first so that the paint drips that fall on the walls can be utilized to paint the wall.
Painting the ceiling is the most difficult part of interior painting. You should use a ladder to paint the ceiling of the room. Firstly, apply the paint on the corners and edges of the ceiling and the moldings with the help of a brush with a width of 3 - 4 inches. Then paint the broad surfaces of the ceiling. To cover the entire ceiling surface without physically straining yourself, you should place the ladder at the center of the room and use brushes or rollers with extensions that can reach out to all the far areas. This way you can paint the entire ceiling without moving the ladder.
Take the roller brush, move it on the paint tray so that its surface get covered with paint and then apply it gradually on the ceiling with random zigzag strokes. Start from any one side and move across the ceiling. If the ceiling is large then divide it into a number of sections and cover each section at a time.
Once you have covered the area with zigzag strokes, merge all the random strokes evenly with paint. For this purpose, you have to make a series of light parallel strokes. At the end of each of the strokes you have to lift your brush or roller. When you are done with one section, then only move on to the next one. In the same manner, you have to carry out the home wall painting. If you wish to do some home decorating paint to improve your interior decoration, you can opt for faux painting, wall stenciling, etc.
While painting the walls or ceilings, do not take any break in between as the paint will get dried up and you will not get the desired finish. After the application of the first coat of paint, if you need to, you can put a second coat after the first one dries up. Lastly, paint should be applied to the trims of the windows, doors, the base board and any other narrow area. It requires a lot of detailing. For the purpose of detailed painting at the narrow trims like that near the windows, use angled brush with one and half inches width.
If you carry out the paint job with the help of these home painting techniques, I am sure you will be successful in getting the kind of end result that you were looking for at the start. Thus, you will feel proud of yourself and at the same time your friends and neighbors will be impressed with the look of your house.
