Home Lighting - Lighting Tips For Your Home

Home lighting should do more than just help you see. Your lighting should also set the mood and add beauty to your home. It's not as difficult as it may seem.
You've got the perfect furniture, wall textures, colors and decorations, but without the right home lighting, your home will not be nearly as beautiful as it could be.

Most people don't put nearly enough thought into their home lighting decisions. The general misconception is that light is simply there to help you see. That's true, but only partially true. You also want your lights to provide character and style. The right lighting decisions will do both.

Start by looking at the style of your home and make sure your lighting fits this style. Modern lighting in a rustic home for example will not work. Stay within your theme. A rustic styled home will do best with wrought iron lamps and lampshades to match. Electric lamps designed to look like old fashioned oil lamps will also work. With the right lighting you'll truly be able to give your home the look and feel of log cabins of the past.

If you have a more modern home, chances are you are featuring clean and simple lines. Again your lighting should fit this pattern and be complimentary with your decor. Modern homes can be understated, and dimmer switches will work very well here. You'll be able to adjust your lighting to fit your mood. Lamps and overhead lights again should match your decor.

Romantically themed homes offer perhaps the most options. You'll want a good mix of both hard and soft lighting. Yes you'll need harsh overhead lights for your daily tasks, but softer lighting will help set the mood. Accomplish this by adding stylish table lamps to the room. Floor lamps can also add to the romantic feel by providing a nice soft glow. Wall sconces are another great source of soft light that can be used when the overhead light is turned off. And if you can make that overhead light a beautiful chandelier you'll enhance the feel even more.

Once you are set on your theme, it's time to consider each room individually. The focus in bathrooms and kitchens needs to be on task lighting, but that doesn't mean you can't add some attractive mood lighting as well. Fluorescents work very well in kitchens because they best mimic outdoor light.

Bedrooms should include a mixture of task and background lighting. Simply adding soft bedside lamps can give a soft glow when the overhead task light is off.

Entry ways should include an overhead light to make your guest feel welcome. Game rooms or offices would benefit from some form of spot lighting over a pool table or desk for example. And if you have any decorations or pictures you want to highlight, consider drawing attention to them by adding some type of accent light.

Whether you are remodeling an existing home or building a new one, you will have a lot of home lighting decisions to make. Take your time and plan everything out. Consider where you want lights, how many you'll need, what purpose they will serve and what style will look best. Yes it is time consuming, but it's a lot easier than changing things around once the work has been done. And adding lights, even table lamps or floor lamps, after the work is done is more difficult than planning things out ahead of time.

Do your home lighting right the first time and you'll be happy with the results for years to come.
