The earliest known reference of engagement rings as love marks is in the second century B.C, in works by the Roman playwright Plautus. Since at least 500 B.C men and women have worn rings on their thumbs, fingers and toes, but the concept of wearing an engagement ring is an expression of feelings and emotions.

The practice of exchanging rings was common in Rome, and was "Christianized" by the 4th century AD. By the 14th century, rich Europeans had their wedding rings made of precious jewels just like modern engagement rings, but the diamond ring as we know now came into being in 1477.

By the 16th century, it seemed a royal marriage was incomplete without a ring. Mary, Queen of Scots, selected one when she married Lord Darnley in 1565. In 1673, James II of England gave an engagement ring to Marry of Medona for their wedding.

In 1839, Prince Albert sent Queen of Victoria a diamond ring as a memento of their first meeting, setting the seal of approval on diamond rings. It was during the second half of the 19th century that the practice of exchanging rings between the partners became firmly established.

The fourth finger of the left arm is considered the engagement ring finger since that time, as there is a vein, which directly runs to the heart. Prince Philip carried on the tradition of royal diamond when he gave his beloved, now Queen Elizabeth II, an engagement ring made of precious diamonds.

Lady Diana, a remarkable figure of royal family was given a £42,000 sapphire and diamond engagement ring by Prince Charles. These rings symbolize the eternal love of a two people since ages.

There are different types of engagement rings that are in the fashion, these days. The most famous are diamond and gold engagement rings. Especially the white gold engagement rings are very popular among young women.
