Children’s sleepwear, sold in the United States, must meet Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. These safety standards apply to sleepwear for infant sizes nine months and up, all the way to children’s pajama size 14. Infant sizes 0 – 9 months are exempt from the safety guidelines, as are adult sizes.

In order to meet safety standards, children’s sleepwear must be snug- fitting or flame resistant. Flame resistance can be achieved by applying flame-retardants to cotton children’s pajamas and nightgowns, or by creating the sleepwear out of flame resistant material, such as polyester.

Selecting The Best Sleepwear For Your Child

Too often, at major department stores and large discount retailers, consumers find disappointing polyester children’s pjs, or low quality cotton pajamas that become way too snug after a few washings. Given that most children have a favorite pajama that they wear almost nightly, buying well-made sleepwear that holds up after many washings can be more cost-effective than repeatedly replacing pajamas that have fallen apart or become too tight.

Matching family pajama patterns are available from infant size 0-3 Months, through children’s pajama size 16, and into adult sizes. The cotton is wonderful, and the prints are fabulous. Hatley also makes outstanding pure cotton children’s pajamas, though they only manufacture up to children’s size 7. Hatley does have very fun and funky coordinating adult sleepwear, it would be ideal if they offered their outstanding products for larger children’s sizes. Another excellent cotton option is the Books to Bed pajama. Patterned after storybook artwork in a number of bedtime classics, these pajamas are comfortable and fun (up to size 10.)

Just Make Sure it Has a Horse On It! Or, a fire truck, fairy, dog… For some kids, cuteness is number one, and it’s nice if it’s comfortable too. While all of the above-listed brands have appealing prints, additional contenders in this category are: Little Miss Matched, Bellepointe, and Pijayz (by Sara’s Prints.) These brands make exceptional polyester products that are truly as comfortable as they are attractive.
