Hidden World of the Amulet

Kat comes across an old store where she buys an amulet from an old, strange woman. However, the amulet is not all what it appears to be, and Kat soon finds herself in the midst of its secrets.
Katrina or Kat as she was normally called was a typical 17 year old girl who lived in New York City. She had a mother, a father and a younger sister, they lived in a nice apartment on the 3rd floor and money was not their biggest concern. On the outside, Kat appeared to be just as normal as her family, but on the inside, Kats biggest interest was the supernatural; she ate, slept and dreamed about demons, dragons, witches and warlocks.

Her parents were not as thrilled as they could be about their daughter's interests, but Kat didn't care.

She didn't have the slightest care in her body about what other people thought of her and her hobbies, as long as she was happy, nothing else mattered in her world.

On the day that this story begins, Kat was walking home from school just like she always did, thinking of how bored she was in every class she had taken part of, and as she walked on the sidewalk, she glanced at all the shops that she passed by, not really looking at what was displayed in the windows for she had seen it so many times before. Turning away from the street, she went down an alleyway; a shortcut she knew would bring her home faster.

The alley was dark; the sunlight tried its best to penetrate the shadows from the tall buildings on either side but with no such luck. Walking towards the other end of the alley, Kat pictured in her mind how all of a sudden, a portal would open in front of her, taking her to another world where evil powers planned to take over the world, making everyone slaves to its will, and only a true hero could free them all.

As Kat's mind began to wander, she came to a halt, to her right, was a tiny little shop, so small that if Kat hadn't been looking, she wouldn't have seen the place at all. On all her walks down the alley, she had never noticed the little wooden sign on the door that said 'Open' so taking a quick decision; she took a step forward, opened the door and went inside.

Her eyes quickly adjusted to the dim light and as she looked around, her eyes took in everything they met. All along the walls there were bookshelves, the shelves were filled with books and what seemed to be years of dust. A few small tables around the room were filled with all sorts of ornaments and figurines, and as Kat took a closer look, she could tell they were from somewhere in Asia.

Kat walked over to the bookshelves, taking a book down now and then, skimming through it before putting it back on its place with no further interest in what was written on the old pages. Her eyes settled upon a round table furthest away from the entrance and she went over to take a closer peek, hoping that something was there that might be more of her interest.

She picked up a glass dragon, careful not to break any small parts, and studied it closely; it was beautiful made, delicate and detailed in every aspect, roaring on its hind legs with wings stretched out to the fullest. Putting it down, she found a box of different colored amulets, the shapes varying just as much as the colors, she took a closer look at them and one special claimed her full attention.

It was a deep shade of red and the first thought that came to Kat's mind when she saw it was that it almost seemed as if someone had dipped the amulet in blood. It was shaped like what appeared to be half a heart, yet somehow, when you looked closer, you saw something completely different. Taking it into her hands, Kat stared at the amulet, so amazed that she did not see another person entering the room from a curtain behind the counter.

-"Ahh, very special amulet yes, and mysterious, ancient myths say it contains deep secret only few people know about" Kat nearly jumped at the sudden sound of the person speaking, clutching the amulet, she turned to her right and was met by the intense stare of an old, wrinkly Chinese woman. "I'm sorry, what did you say?" Kat asked politely, trying not to sound too frightened. The woman smiled and repeated the words whilst pointing a crooked finger towards the amulet in Kat's hands.

Kat widened her eyes, which was now filled with interest and she opened her hands to look down on the amulet, and for the first time since laying her eyes upon it, she noticed symbols carved along the edges, but they were old and faded, so much that she had to take the amulet right up to her eyes to have even the slightest chance of seeing all the symbols. But as she squeezed her eyes together, focusing only on the symbols, her surroundings suddenly flickered and that's when something incredible happened to her.

It was like some sort of a dream, though it felt as real as it possibly could; Kat could see a forest and what seemed to be a village, taken right out of some fantasy movie that she had seen on TV. Hovering just above the village, Kat flew a little closer, though she had no idea how, and she could see that the people walking around underneath her were wearing clothes that appeared to be from the medieval times.

The people were wearing clothes of brown fabric and what looked like leather belts and necklaces. The women wore long brown skirts and Kat noticed that they could very much use a nice, long bath. But what Kat noticed to be different, was that they were all wearing some sort of metal bracelets that didn't match the supposed time period at all.

Like the vision had suddenly started, it suddenly ended when Kat blinked, and then she was back in the shop. She looked around like, but nothing seemed to have changed, she was still in the same spot as before, in front of the round table and she was still holding the amulet in her hands.

-"Anything wrong my dear?" the Chinese woman asked, she was glancing at Kat, with a look in her smalls eyes, almost as if she knew something had happened to Kat. And Kat had a weird feeling that the old lady might have been watching her ever since she entered the shop. "Nothing's wrong, I just lost myself for a moment, that's all" Kat quickly said, not looking at the woman. She asked for the price of the amulet and the lady answered she would sell it for 6 dollars, Kat thought for a moment then decided to buy it. She was kind of anxious to get out of the shop, but on her way towards the door, the old lady spoke again:

-"I hope you will like amulet very much, and maybe you find its hidden secret too." Kat merely smiled and walked opened the door, she didn't turn around and look back, but if she had, she might have seen the old Chinese lady disappear into thin air with a grim smile on her wrinkly old face.
