Hidden Places in Georgia

Find adventure and the Old South in some of the lesser known and hidden towns and communities of Georgia.
When you think of exploring the world do you think of the state of Georgia? Probably not. Most people know about Georgia from the Olympics or because they got stuck at the Atlanta airport on a layover, but there is so much more to the state that is hidden and well worth a visit. Here are just a few of the best hidden places in Georgia to visit that you won’t find on a tourist brochure.

One surprise place to visit is the city of Newnan. This once-quaint town has grown and now is a suburb of Atlanta with all the things suburbs have like stores and chain restaurants, but if you leave the strip near the highway and head into the old town you’ll still find the Old South charm that rapidly disappearing from the South. The downtown area is made up of blocks of century old buildings that contain some of the best independent restaurants and unique stores you’ll find anywhere. Take some time to stroll toward College Street and Lagrange Street to see some examples of antebellum and reconstruction houses. Newnan is a favorite among Georgia travel enthusiast.

Athens, the home of the University of Georgia, offers a fun weekend for someone that enjoys having fun. The downtown area of Athens contains over 30 bars and pubs that are smoke-free offering a relaxing place for a conversation or crazy time dancing. Whatever your style Athens has a club, pub, or bar for you. If you are lucky enough to be in Athens on a football game Saturday you’ll experience one of the best outdoor parties in America - even if you don’t have a ticket.

For a slower pace visit Young Harris. This small community sits in the most beautiful mountain valley in Georgia. This is the home of distinguished Governor and Senator Zell Miller and home to his alma matter, Young Harris College. Try to catch a play at the college and visit during the fall for views that will take your breath away and charge your soul.

The Travel Channel called St. Marys "America's Most Beautiful Wilderness Beach." This coastal town is the gateway to Cumberland Island and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. With great weather almost year round and some of the wildest coastlines in the United States, St. Marys is a gem for outdoor lovers. The Navy has a submarine base here so make sure to visit the old submarine museum as well as some of the other home museums.

These are only a few of the special and unknown places to visit in Georgia. The state is full of surprises and welcomes you to find them. The friendliest people are found in the hidden places like restaurants off of back roads and in the small town square that dot the state. Come find your adventure in Georgia.
