Hero
A short story written for my English controlled assessment about an angel who gives his life to save her.
My deep brown hair whipped ferociously across my face as I grew more and more restless. I couldn't stay here any longer. Would it really hurt if I just followed? I didn't think so, but then I didn't think a lot, I just jumped straight in at the deep end. The scene changed. The pretty purple sky was gone and I was no longer in the field. I was falling, falling so fast that the only noise I heard was the beat of my own heart, drumming it's rhythm into my skull, into my brain. Fear ripped through my body at super speed again and again yet the surprise never faded. Then it stopped.
It was early and the crisp morning air was refreshing against my skin. I couldn't sleep ... again; it had been months since I'd last had a good night's sleep. Oh well. I quite enjoyed my morning walks, they were peaceful, or they used to be it seemed as though every time I turned a corner he was there and for some reason it hurt my head. I saw things, it was like watching someone else's memories but I was in them.
Build up
A small, innocent version of myself with shiny, shoulder-length brown hair and happy violet eyes. Being carried out to sea but arriving back at shore seconds later, unharmed. There he was again! Why did he always do that to me? I focused my whole attention on one of the ancient willow trees, their vines of leaves twisting around the wood, they really were beautiful. A five-year old version of myself trying my hardest to climb the vines but slipping, crying out desperately for my daddy but him not hearing. Being placed gently back on the ground, again unharmed. A seven-year old I cowering in front of a bully and the bully running away frightened. Then I fainted.
My eyes were sticky, I fought to open them but I wished I hadn't, I was looking straight into the eyes of a boy with shaggy black hair. He smiled uneasily.
"Rayn, are you alright?" he said, his voice like honey, filled with concern.
"Mmm" I managed to say before realizing that it wasn't possible for him to have caught me, he wasn't anywhere near me!
"How did you get here?" I tried to say but it just came out as a gurgle so I gave up on talking.
"You're wondering how I got to you?" he asked almost laughing at my attempt of speech, I nodded my head, defeated.
"I'm your angel."
Dilemma
Words finally came back to me and they had brought a thousand questions with them. "What?" I said, "angel?"
"Yeah, I look after you, look I know it sounds weird but hear me out!" he begged.
"Angel ... it doesn't feel weird ... It feels ... true, and it explains a lot, when I fall you-"
"Pick you up." He finished for me, blushing, "I always have done."
He looked so helpless, smiling slightly, his face showed only one emotion, love, and it was all for me. I felt my heart lift and a smile that mirrored his spread itself across my features, I was scared. I couldn't explain it, I was just scared. I looked directly into his eyes and realized I didn't know his name.
"What is your name?" I asked, my voice softer than I had ever heard it.
"I don't have one" He whispered
"Then, I'll just call you angel" I laughed and Angel laughed too, our voices melted together creating a crescendo of harmonious laughter, it was amazing. It stopped all too soon, Angel's laughter dying before mine and his look of happiness was replaced by one of sorrow. A crow cawed ahead and Angel winced, closing his eyes in pain and sighing.
He muttered something that sounded like "I'm sorry, so sorry."
And darkness came, not night but darkness. Not normal darkness, it writhed and fluttered like a hundred thousand black feathers and flew, covering every surface and stealing the light of the harsh, early morning sun from the sky. It breathed and blinked and looked me straight in the eye, its horrifying features filling my lungs and drowning me out with a silent scream. A white wing, no shadow.
Angel
The white crow whispered in my ear, one chance to get her back, one chance to protect her forever ... I die. It sounds so simple, so obvious just give my life for hers. As I strode into his cave a strange calm took over me, an everlasting peace that would accompany me as I watched her to safety, but not yet. The second that I stepped through the entrance I knew that this would be my last chance to see her, dead or alive. A sly, slow voice spoke from the shadowed corner and the white outline glowed in the blackness, seeping into my brain and paralyzing all thoughts that skipped across my consciousness I could not make out the words, just a hum of noise fluttering like an annoying bird in my ear.
Resolution
The glowing figure cradled her limp body and for the merest slip of time I thought the worst, she stirred, just a faint movement but it gave me the best feeling ever, she was alright!
"You came for her, how sweet" The sly voice ricocheted off the walls and straight into my head it was the voice of pure evil. I nodded, unable to do anything else and swallowed, The white crow threw her body away from him and looked at me for a reaction, it was torture; I almost cried out in pain as her body hit the floor, she was just a toy to him, a ragdoll in a room full of gifts, she meant nothing.
"Y- You said she could go" I stammered but knew in my heart that she was too weak to go anywhere.
"Too weak" he said in a sing-song voice, he was enjoying this much too much for my liking. "She will wake as you die"
"Wake her now!" I cried
"We are forgetting our manners aren't we young Javan?" His smile couldn't be more leering and the twinkle in his eye repulsed me, "time is ticking Javan make your decision before I decide I want you both."
I stepped forwards bowing my head, he smiled and whispered in Latin.
"Ego dico vos incendia ut meus suffragium vindico nostrum proditor, I call you fire come to me and punish our betrayer."
The pain was harrowing as a solid chamber of fire encircled me fed upon my strength, it reared back and came again causing me as much pain as possible, I could not feel a thing. It bit into my flesh ripping it and filling the air with the smell of my own blood and still I did not react I could not. All I could do was watch in horror as her eyes opened and focused on me, clouding over with tears as she screamed and screamed at him to let me go. Nothing worked; it was the last thing I saw.
I felt a tear fall on to my rapidly cooling skin, a warm hand stroke across my cheek, so delicately.
"Don't leave me here, don't leave me alone."
I never will my dear.
A soft voice filled my head, she was singing, a sweet melody that made my last seconds the best of my life.
I promise you I never will.
