Hernia Repair
The following article gives you an in depth look into the different facets of hernia repair and what it involves. Read if you want to know more.

Hernia Surgery
All types of hernia do not need surgery. It is only in select conditions and depending on the causes of hernia that it is necessary. You need to consult your doctor to determine whether surgery is needed or not. If it is determined that you need a surgery, then this is how the events will flow.
Before the Surgery
Make sure that your insurance is in place. The doctor will give you specific instructions about what are the precautions that are needed to be taken in preparation for the surgery. The common ones will be the kind of foods to avoid and the activities that you should refrain from like lifting and bending.
During the Surgery
Usually, a general anesthesia will be administered to you for the surgery. The kind of anesthesia administered depends on your medical history and will be determined by the anesthesiologist and surgeon in consultation with each other. The kinds of surgeries performed will either be a laparoscopy or an open hernia repair. Both of which will require the surgeon to make incisions into your body in order to repair it. A surgical mesh (made of sterile synthetic material) will be sutured onto the cavity to strengthen the weakened muscle.
After the Surgery
The hernia by itself is a very painful condition and the surgery will leave after effects that run from severe pain for some and mild for others. That is why medication is important and painkillers are prescribed. Also, the bandage will be in place for a week or two after the operation. So it is necessary to maintain hygiene and keep the bandage clean so that there is no risk of infection.
Complications
It is possible that some complications might arise during or after the surgery. These include.
- Bleeding at the incision site
- Infection
- Severe and chronic pain
- Excessive sweating
- Difficulty in breathing
- Constipation
- Urine retention
- Breathing difficulty
- Adverse reaction to the anesthesia
- Recurrence of hernia
- Fever and chills
- Nausea and vomiting
Like every surgery, the hernia surgery also has some post operative care involved. A patient will have to spend about 2-3 days in the hospital after the surgery, so that the hernia surgery recovery is sufficiently monitored. After that there are certain recovery precautions that need to be carried out:
- The regular intake of painkillers or any other medication given, without fail.
- Supporting the abdomen and back whenever any activity that may cause any strain is carried out.
- Stress on fluid intake for sometime after surgery.
- Strictly avoiding the lifting of any heavy objects as this will put a strain on the wound and might cause harm to the incision and wound.
- Light walking (only after consultation with the doctor) This helps because it gets rid of the soreness and causes the blood to flow to that area.
Cost
The hernia surgery cost is determined based on the city you're getting operated from, the inclusion of insurance and other hospital and doctor's fees which may vary. Approximately, the cost could range between USD 5,000 to 15,000. It is advised that you have your insurance in place.
The hernia repair surgery is quite a common phenomenon in the United States and god forbid if you or someone you know has to go through this procedure, at least you now know what it involves and how you can be prepared.
