Hernia Repair Surgery
The following article gives information on the two basic types of hernia repair surgery. Go through it to gain useful knowledge.

Hernia may hinder the flow of blood and may lead to blockages in the intestines. When the hernia impairs your normal life and medication is not able to resolve the cause, surgery is considered to be a treatment option. The surgical procedure is commonly referred to as herniorrhaphy. Hernia repair surgery or hernia surgery cost depends upon a number of factors like the cost of living in your city, experience of the surgeon, severity of hernia in your case, etc.
Hernia Surgery Options
There are two hernia repair surgery options. They are open repair or laparoscopic. Both types of surgeries for hernia cure are done under general or local anesthesia. In general anesthesia, the patient is asleep during the procedure. In the local anesthesia, the patient is awake and aware of what's happening to him but can not feel anything at the operation site.
Open Repair
In the former type, a cut is made at the affected spot and the abnormality is treated with the help of surgical tools. The surgeon makes a cut, usually 3-4 inches long, on the spot where hernia is located. He makes the incision through all the layers of skin and fat. This allows him to see the tear. He then applies the mesh to repair the hernia. The surgeon may also push the bulged out tissue back into place. He may pull the surrounding muscle to cover the cut or tear. He then sews up the cut skin.
Laparoscopic
In the laparoscopic type, 3-4 small incisions are made into the abdomen. A surgical instrument is inserted through the tubes into the abdomen. A camera is also inserted so that the surgeon can view the hernia and other surrounding organs on a television set in the operation theater. Gas is used to assist better view. The surgeon works through the cut to repair hernia. He does it by suturing a piece of mesh over the cut and securing it with special surgical staples.
The hernia surgery time lies anywhere between 30 mins and 60 mins to complete. It may take a little less time if the patient is young. The patient is not allowed to take bath for the next couple of days. This is because the water may cause release of the skin tape, and thus opening of the wound. Most of the patients, who have undergone hernia repair surgery, can return to everyday activities like taking showers and driving within two or three weeks. However, they are asked to restrain themselves from any strenuous activity like lifting heavy weight, jogging, etc. They have to do it for at least 8-10 weeks as the hernia repair surgery recovery time period is nearly the same. However, the complete hernia surgery recovery may take about 2 months.
The patient is advised to take fiber-rich foods and consume plenty of water. The patient has to follow the given two suggestions as he is at high risk of suffering from indigestion problems. In case the patient experiences some hernia surgery complications such as nausea, vomiting, incision drainage, fever and chills, severe or persistent pain, or difficulty urinating, he should seek medical intervention as early as possible.
