Herbal Remedies for Allergies
An allergy can be termed as a disorder associated with the immune system, where the immune system becomes hypersensitive to certain substances, called allergens. Usually, the immune system protects the body from the possible invasion of harmful foreign substances such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. by producing antibodies to destroy them. However, in case of an allergy, the immune system reacts even when you come in contact with harmless substances, such as pollen, dust, certain foods, medications and insect bites. Allergies are usually an inherited disorder, though sometimes, environmental factors such as pollution, changes in diet and exposure to infectious diseases at an early age can play an important role in developing allergies.

Herbal Remedies of Allergies

Hay fever, asthma, food allergies and eczema are some common types of allergies. Symptoms of such allergies include sneezing, redness of eyes, respiratory problems, itching, bloating, diarrhea, and vomiting. Allergies are usually treated with antihistamine medicines, nasal corticosteroids, etc. However, some herbs can also prove beneficial in containing allergic reactions by building up resistance against allergens.

Chamomile is known for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and antihistamine properties and is used in tea. It is an excellent herbal remedy for allergies, especially in the case of hay fever. Being an antihistamine, it counteracts the effects of histamine (a compound released by the immune system during allergic reactions) and thereby reduces hypersensitivity.

Vitamin C, also has antihistamine properties and hence, consumption of fruits that contain a sufficient amount of vitamin C can prove effective in reducing the severity and extent of allergic reactions. Fruits, such as lemon, orange, grapes, peppers, berries and plums, which are a rich source of vitamin C, can help you keep those allergies at bay. Spinach and broccoli are also significant sources of this vitamin.

Eucalyptus has expectorant properties and the oil obtained from eucalyptus can be used topically on the chest to clear congestion. It is also helpful in clearing nasal congestion. Besides, it can loosen phlegm and protect from insect bites. Nettle is a herb that facilitates expectoration and reduces inflammation. Roots of this herb are used in the treatment of hay fever. Another effective medicine for hay fever is angelica. The active compounds of this herb block the formation of antibodies produced in response to allergic reactions.

Licorice is another wonderful herb for treatment of allergies and asthma. The root of the plant contains glycyrrhizic acid, which has anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effects and so, it is mainly effective in hay fever, allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma and conjunctivitis. It is also a strong expectorant and hence, can be used to treat cough and chest infections.

Ginger is known for its anti-microbial property. It inhibits the activity of platelet-activating factors and clotting agent, which are responsible for producing inflammatory reactions in an allergy. Ginger also prevents the excess secretion of histamine and thereby reduces allergic symptoms.

Honey can help you by augmenting your body's resistance against allergens. Garlic is a decongestant and hence can be used in relieving the problems of congestion caused by allergies. Thyme can also be used for clearing congestion. It is an effective medicine in cough, nasal congestion and sinus problems. Even green tea reduces the release of histamine.

To summarize, nature has provided us with lots of medicinal herbs to cure a number of ailments including allergies. However, it is also equally important to avoid certain specific substances that can cause allergic reactions. Besides, severe allergies to certain medicines and foods can give rise to life-threatening conditions. In such allergies, one should always consult a certified physician.
