Hello. Goodbye - Epilogue
Epilogue to my novellas: "Two Lives, One Friendship, No Regrets", "Plus One. How to Catch a Cloud.", "Unwanted Fairytale.", and "Hello. Goodbye."
"Ooh, what a precious little darling..." Lily cooed as she leaned over the bassinet.
Looking over her shoulder, she leaned into the side of Jamie's face.
"What would you name our child?"
"Simple. Jamie Jr. It's unisex. Good for a boy or a girl," he smiled very proud of his choice.
As she picked up the little bundle, Lily whispered to the baby, "Thank heavens he's not your father, Kimmie."
"Hey! What's wrong with Jamie?!"
The room of Kimmie's aunts and uncles laughed.
"My gosh, the second baby girl in this lot," exclaimed Charlie, Ara's husband who grabbed one of her hands. "Hopefully we break the pattern!"
Ara rubbed her swollen belly with the hand he held and replied, "We'll see, Hun. We'll see."
Good thing she had trained new staff for Jan's Diner. It was so well an oiled machine, both Ara and Charlie could afford to take time away from the place.
Ara was six months pregnant with their first baby. Charlie was excited as ever. And though she wouldn't reveal it yet because he didn't know, she knew he'd be in for a pleasant surprise. Earlier that day she found out that they were having a boy.
Ara leaned into the crook of Charlie's neck as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders.
Jamie watched as Lily swayed with the baby in her arms. This was such a perfect moment, he thought wishing he had brought his camera.
Suddenly Phoenix, Georgia's husband, caught their attention with, "Guys... we have great news!"
Everyone looked in their direction as Phoenix bounced Chari on his knees as Georgia blushed.
The two looked at each other and simultaneously said, "Chari's gonna be a big sister in six months!"
Cheers, hugs and kisses went around to their end of the room. It was all so exciting.
Georgia was still Phoenix's executive assistant when he allowed her to be. Most of the time, he preferred her to be his Misses and babies' mom. He loved her with all his heart and never failed to tell her just that.
Chari began to squirm in her father's arms. Letting her free to roam around Winnie and Danny's living room, she stood at Jamie's heel and reached her arms up high.
When Jamie didn't pick her up, she turned and reached out for Lily.
"Lah-lee! Up! Up!"
"Ok, lil one," Lily said lifting the cherub up on one hip.
"How does it feel, Win?" Lily asked, as she glanced over to her cousin relaxing by the fire and Jamie held baby Kimmie in his arms.
"Wonderful," Winnie replied as she gazed into her wonderful husband, Danny's eyes.
"To think I almost gave up on this dream..."
"I'm glad you didn't, Mama," Danny responded as he lent down to give his wife a kiss.
"You did great, Win..."
"So did you."
"She's our miracle."
"Yes, she is."
Newborn Kimmie began to cry and this was how they all knew they'd overstayed their welcome.
Kimmie was hungry.
Jamie deposited the baby in her father's arms and grabbed hold of his wife from behind.
"When's it our turn?"
"So soon? We've only just bought our house."
"Well?"
Lily rolled her eyes at Chari who still clung to her hip.
"Men..."
Chari giggled and squirmed as her aunt tickled her. Jamie took Chari from Lily and put her down. Almost immediately Chari ran into her father's arms. Lily noticed there was a look on his face, but couldn't place it.
Longing? Was it?
Winnie and Danny had moved into the next room to nurse the baby.
Ara sat on the stairs while Charlie fetched her jacket and runners.
Georgia and Phoenix bundled up little Chari.
Lily wanted to save the news for later. But she needed to ease her husband's mind.
"Sweetie," she began as she tugged softly at his elbow and reached for both his hands.
Looking deep into his eyes, she smiled and said, "We're pregnant."
Jamie's face flashed into the widest smile she'd ever seen. He raised her up in his arms and gave her a spin around.
"Hey guys!" Jamie yelled out, "we're having a baby too!"
Lily squealed in delight just like the old days.
"I missed that," Jamie whispered and held her tight.
From all corners of Winnie and Danny's house, all you heard was "Congrats guys!"
This is definitely a great beginning to our story, Lily thought.
"I love you, Sweetie."
"I love you more, Sunshine."
