Hello. Goodbye - Chapter Twenty - FINAL
Lily and Jamie's relationship has only just begun...
Chapter Twenty.
The weeks went by quickly.
On his free days, Jamie drove Libby to school and back home.
On other occasions, Libby stayed over at Lily's place because no one could fetch her.
On one weekend, Jamie met Bobby and his partner, when he slept over to have some quality time with Lily.
Now, the final concert Libby had been preparing for, had finally come, and Jamie, his parents and siblings arrived just in time to find seats.
Lily was nervous too, because she had been told to prepare an act, too.
Finally, Libby revealed what song she chose to sing. Irene Cara's "Out Here on My Own" was perfect for Libby's voice. Such a beautiful song.
Aside from fine tuning and teaching her how to breathe properly, Lily encouraged Libby to try to learn how to play the song on piano.
Each time they worked on the song, Lily would always get goose bumps because the conviction in her pupil's voice was believable.
Libby was up.
The applause was grand. Lily looked up at her pupil on stage with pride. Looking at the audience, she saw Libby's family stand in ovation. Oddly, she noticed a teenage boy in the back corner of the auditorium rise too. Libby's attention was on him for a few seconds and the confidence on her face wavered a bit. Quickly after making eye contact with the mystery boy, Lily noted Libby's eyes shift to her family.
"And now..." The emcee introduced Lily as first of the few teachers to graduate this year.
"... To perform a song from the play Phantom of the Opera, 'Think of Me'."
Lily sang straight from the heart often times in her performance catching Jamie's eye. At the end of her performance, she earned a standing ovation from the auditorium including, to her surprise, Gabby and Michael. Looking around to savor the moment, her eyes landed on the most beautiful man there and she mouthed "I love you" to him.
"You did it!" He mouthed proudly.
Just then, Principal Kelly presented her with her certification on stage and Jamie escorted her down the steps to a seat he saved just for her.
The rest of the program went on like this, as her colleagues sang and received their certificates as well.
Jamie reserved a table for seven at a local family restaurant in honor of Lily and Libby's hard work.
"To dreams fulfilled," he toasted.
"Here, here!" Everyone jeered.
"Congratulations, Sunshine!"
Lily gazed up at Jamie and whispered, "Happy birthday, Jamie."
He thanked her and interrupted his family's chattering.
"One more thing, since it is my birthday I get one wish right?"
"Oh wait! Let's bring out your cake!"
The server appeared with the most delicious layers of chocolate mousse and shavings.
"Ok, so my one wish..." Jamie began as he took hold of Lily's hand. Shifting in his seat a bit, Lily looked around the table in anticipation of what Jamie had up his sleeve.
But she shouldn't have concerned herself with what was up his sleeve but in his pocket.
"Will you marry me, Lily?" Jamie asked as he knelt on one knee and slipped the prettiest diamond ring on her finger.
She held his face in her hands and gave him one sweet kiss.
"Yes!"
"Here, here!" Everyone around the table toasted again.
After taking a sip of the wine, he turned to Lily who blushed profusely at the attention they were all drawing in.
Later that night as they lay in bed, Jamie couldn't help but voice the thought in his head.
"I'm surprised you gave in. I thought for sure you'd give me a lesson on being practical."
She nuzzled her nose against his.
"But by saying yes I was being practical. I love you. You love me. The most practical thing to do is say yes so we can spend all our time like this..."
"Oh Sunshine, I'd wait for you if I had to do it again."
She leaned in and spoke softly and innocently into his ear, "Really? Because I've been offered a job three hours away... "
He groaned.
"Just kidding," she smiled as she placed tiny kisses all over his face.
"Happy birthday, my Adonis."
