Hello. Goodbye - Chapter Twelve
Lily visits Winnie & Danny and tries to ignore her disappointment when Jamie doesn't follow through.
Chapter Twelve.
"I'm really sorry, Lil. I was a jerk the other night."
"Don't worry about it, Sweetie."
He was convinced she was wary of their situation.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong. I just have a few things to get off my plate before the weekend's done."
"What are you working on?"
"Setting up a few contracts for prospective clients."
"That's awesome, Lil. So you're getting a hang at this business stuff."
"Yeah, I guess I am," she replied smiling at his enthusiasm.
"Did you want me to leave you alone, then?"
"No... Could you stay? You don't mind if we just stay on the line without much conversation? Just hearing you makes me feel better."
"Then of course I'll stay."
"So, did you settle on a date for you gallery launch?"
"I want you there. So whenever you're available."
"Oh Sweetie, just tell me the date and I'll make sure I take that day off."
He named a few dates he had in mind and she marked them all on her calendar.
"All blocked off just for you."
"Thanks, Lil."
Lily wasn't completely sure about the plans she was working on, but she had to try. Her parents were behind her and welcomed her home in case things didn't work out. Of course, that meant she'd be ten hours away from Jamie.
She worked on the contracts while he put final touches on some of his sketches.
When Lily finally finished her contracts, she checked her e-mail and found the confirmation she had been waiting for. Since she had Jamie on the phone, she decided to let him in on her plans.
"Jamie, you there?"
"Yes, Pretty Lily...?" He said, obviously concentrating on his work.
"Uh.. Never mind."
The scratching sound immediately stopped.
"No, tell me... Were you going to say something?"
"Oh, yeah.." She began and blurted, "I forgot to tell you! Winnie's pregnant!"
No, that wasn't what she wanted to tell him, but it was great news anyway.
"I know, isn't that great?! Kiera told me the other day."
"Oh, she did?"
"Yeah. After class..."
"Oh..." she didn't know what else to say.
"I'm gonna visit her next weekend."
"You're coming here next weekend?!"
"Yeah.. That was my news."
"I can't wait!"
"I'll be staying at her place if you available... Just call me."
"Of course I'll be available, honey. Why do you sound skeptical?"
"Do I? I didn't realize."
"Are you driving down?"
"No. I decided to take the train."
"Good idea. Need a pick up from the station?"
"You'd pick me up?"
"Of course!"
"Honey, you've got a full plate."
"I can manage to pick up my girlfriend from the station!"
"You have a girlfriend?"
"Don't start with me, my Jealous Lily."
She laughed at him.
"Fine... Be there at nine in the morning on Saturday."
"I'll be there."
But on Saturday morning at 10am, he still hadn't shown. Her big bubble of hopes were crushed to the ground. Lily could understand, she knew he had a busy schedule with his family. She only wished she insisted he not bother. The disappointment she felt was too heavy for her. Her tears threatened to spill over and she let them.
Lily resolved to make the best of her plans. Winnie was expecting her by now. Making a call to her cousin, and hiring a cab to take her there, she was greeted at the door with a great big hug.
"Where's Danny?"
"He's out in the back cooking our lunch on the grill."
"Nice..."
"Aww, honey. You've been crying?"
"Don't mind it. Please?" She pleaded with her cousin.
"Alright, Lil."
"So..." Lily began chatting up about everything she had planned.
"That sounds like a great plan. You are definitely free to stay over here as much or as long as you want, too! I'd love the company. Ever since Danny found out I was pregnant and has requested I stay home, I have had nothing to do!"
"Not true!" Danny exclaimed as he walked into the kitchen with the grilled chicken and veggies.
"I'm always here too!"
"Oh yeah, right..." Winnie scoffed.
"Sometimes I just want to throw his cell phone out the window."
"But-"
Winnie walked over to her husband and cut him off with a deep, meaningful kiss.
Lily was left to wonder if she'd ever have this with Jamie. It all seemed like a dream so unattainable right now.
But there was always a possibility that they could work at it.
Lily excused herself, turned off her phone and took a nap for a few hours. Needing to clear her mind, she hoped some rest would do her some good.
