Hello. Goodbye - Chapter Thirteen
Lily says goodbye to love... for now.
Chapter Thirteen.
"You have reached the voice mail of..."
Disconnect.
All morning and afternoon long, Lily's cell was going straight to her voice mail. He already knew without a doubt she'd be mad at him for being late. When he got to the station at 10:15am he hoped she'd still be there and he also anticipated an argument.
But she wasn't there and she wasn't answering his calls.
Jamie didn't want to bug Kiera for Winnie's contact but he did anyway out of anxiety.
"Good luck."
"Thanks, I'll need it."
Lately, Jamie knew Lily had been letting him off easily. He really wasn't like this. No sleep was making him easily irate. Not seeing or talking to her made him equally grumpy. His mother, at one point, had to remind him how crazy he was becoming and that this was not who he is.
He rang the doorbell.
No answer.
He knocked on the door.
No answer.
He tried calling Lily's number.
Voice mail.
Suddenly his phone began to ring.
Not bothering to look at the display, he answered it.
"Hello?"
"Jamie, can you pick your brother up from his dentist appointment? I had to leave him there to pick up Libby and Gabby."
He asked his mother to do the pick ups only for today. She couldn't do the drop offs which was why he was late by an hour and fifteen. His estimation didn't account for traffic.
It was a Saturday for heaven's sake. Does the normal person really have this much on their plate?
Driving didn't seem like much, but you have to be behind the wheel to know it.
Lily, he pleaded, answer the damn phone.
He rang the doorbell one more time.
Nothing.
Sitting on the front step, he decided to wait just for a bit.
His ears were drowning in the noise of his thoughts. He had to see her in person.
Unbeknown to him, someone padded down the stairs and peeped through the window.
The front door burst open and just as he turned his neck to see who it was, Lily made a dash for him.
"Jamie!"
She was too quick for him. He almost fell over when she ran to give him the biggest hug ever.
"Sweet Lily... You surprise me, every time..." He murmured in her hair.
"What's wrong?" She whispered.
He shook his head in disbelief.
"I came here thinking you hate me for being late. You weren't answering your phone..."
"Oh..." She looked down unable to look him in the eyes.
"You are mad..."
"I was disappointed."
"That's worse..."
"No..." her head snapped up.
"I'm fine. Come in..."
"Where are the others?"
"They went out for a movie."
"Without you?"
"I fell asleep right when I got here. I wasn't feeling too good, so I told them to go without me."
"I'm glad," he said hooking her chin with the crook of his index finger.
"I've missed you so much."
"I didn't," she smirked.
His jaw dropped, "I hope you're kidding!"
"Of course I am," she confessed, just as he swooped down to give her a kiss on the cheek.
"Jamie, come inside... We really need to talk."
"I-"
His phone rang.
"Sorry, Lil. I have to get this...
Yes?
...
Oh, shoot...
I'll be there soon. Give me ten minutes."
Slamming his cell phone shut he gave an apologetic smile to Lily.
"Have to go?"
"Yeah. Michael's at the dentist and has been waiting for a few hours now."
"Go..."
"Will you still be up in an hour?"
"No," she lied.
"Can we go out tomorrow?"
"I don't think so. We, Winnie and I, made plans."
"Day after that?"
"I'm starting my new job."
"What?! You quit?"
"I've requested a leave of absence without pay. If they don't take it, I will hand in my resignation letter."
"What are you-"
"Jamie.. Your brother's waiting for you."
"But-"
"Go..."
"Call me?"
She shook her head in response.
"I think we should really stop this. It's no good for us."
"Just give me one night, Lil. Please?"
His plea broke her heart and resolve.
She told herself to be strong and that she could do this. But at first sight, she ran to him with open arms.
Scrounging up the last false bravado she had, she whispered, "We're done, Jamie".
"But we hardly started."
"It's better like this. I'm no one, Jamie."
"But I want you."
"We'll be together if and when the time is right. Just to stop ourselves from disappointing one another, we've got to just move on separately."
She turned away from him but he held her arm in his hand.
"You believe this garbage?"
Defending herself and her decision, she looked deep into his eyes with a scowl and slapped his hand away.
"Yes, I believe this. I have to believe this or else nothing good will come out of all this waiting, Jamie. It's the only idea that keeps me positive. It's only thing that gives me hope."
Lily's tears fell freely.
"I need to believe that once we're done with building our separate dreams and achieving out separate goals, we can finally have time for each other."
Nothing but sadness fell over his face.
"You've heard what I have to say. Just go... Your brother is waiting."
"Lily... Baby... Don't hate me. Don't leave me!" He pleaded.
"Honey, I don't hate you. I still feel the same way I always have. We just have to be practical. Go and pick up your brother. I'll call you."
But hours, days and eventually a month passed and she still hadn't called.
