Hello. Goodbye - Chapter Seventeen
Lily and Libby make plans to see Jamie's exhibit.
Chapter Seventeen.
Lily made them lunch of egg sandwiches and salad. Libby shared some stories of her big brother's obsession with locking himself up in his room or being at the senior's home until late night.
"Have you seen his exhibit?" Libby asked.
"Yeah. I was there for the first day. Have you?"
Libby frowned, "No. I haven't."
"Why not?"
"Because my brother and sister don't want to come with me. They think..."
"Do you want me to take you when we finish a lesson one day? That way we kill two birds with one stone?"
"How?"
"You get to go see the exhibit and you're closer to home!"
"Sounds good. But what about you? It'll be a long drive home if you drive us."
"We'll figure it out."
"You could sleep over."
"Maybe not..." She answered.
Libby figured immediately why not.
"Don't worry about them, Lil."
"It's fine. I know why they don't like me... I get it."
"They're just immature like that."
"It's ok."
"Just promise you won't leave my brother because of them."
"Ok," she answered.
Libby's cell phone rang, when she looked at who it was she said a quick goodbye to Lily and made giddy dash for the door.
"Bye Libby," Lily waved after her.
"See you tomorrow," Libby yelled back.
Meanwhile, parking his car on the side of the road, Jamie wondered what friend lived in this complex. His little sister only started her vocal training today and already she was chummy with someone?
The passenger door burst open.
"Hi Jamie."
"Hey... So who lives here?"
"My vocal teacher. You'd like her!"
"No thanks, Lib. I'm practically spoken for."
Libby shrugged.
On the two-hour ride home, Libby mentioned that she was going to take her teacher to his art exhibit. It wasn't a lie.
"That's good, Lib," he answered uninterested.
"You'd like her."
"Yeah? That's nice."
"Mm.."
"What?"
"Nothing."
The next school day happened quite like the previous. Only, her brother decided to come to the door to pick up his sister. He was hoping to catch a glimpse of this teacher just for safety's sake. It sounded too sketchy.
"She's in the washroom right now," Libby whispered.
"Just wait until tomorrow."
"Uh.. Ok," Jamie replied letting it go one more time.
Finally, Libby was excited to see the exhibit. She loved her brother's art. She knew her other siblings admired it too, but were too stubborn to let go of the idea that he had finally fallen in love with a great person.
Libby was learning to like Lily each day. Maybe it was too early in the month, but already Libby felt Lil was a good mentor.
"There's one room I haven't visited, yet.." Lily remembered the room of mirrors. Oh, right - not mirrors, she corrected herself.
You go on and start wherever you want. I just want to go and check out the room I skipped.
"Alright," Libby replied as she walked into the room with paintings of when her brother and teacher encountered each other.
"Wow," she said aloud.
"Hey, Lib. What are you doing here alone?"
"Hi Jamie. Wow, your art is really good. It's improved a lot."
"Thanks kiddo. But you didn't answer my question."
"Oh, I'm not alone. My teacher's upstairs. Said she missed a room the last time she was here. What are you doing with a room full of mirrors?"
Jamie's heart picked up the pace as he raced toward the right room when he caught on about Libby's teacher.
"Lily..." He whispered as he watched her from the doorway.
She was sitting in the middle of the room on the bench, like an angel. He purposely put the bench there for her to sit on if ever she came in here.
He wanted her to see the many places he'd seen her face. He wanted her to know what it was like to be missed. He wanted her to know what it was like without her around. He wanted her to know...
When she looked toward the door, he caught a glimpse of the un-shed tears brimming in her eyes.
Jamie couldn't handle the sight before him so he came in to take a seat beside her. Wrapping an arm around her shoulder, he hushed her sobs.
"I'm sorry..." She moaned softly into his shoulder.
