Hello. Goodbye - Chapter Fourteen
Jamie delivers his invitations.
Chapter Fourteen.
Jamie held on to the hope that she'll eventually call. He just had to believe it. Even if it had been a few months and counting.
Every day since that night she told him to leave, his days went on in routine. Just like it did before she became a changing point in his life. She became something he could look forward to.
Lily had told him she was starting a new job. But he never got the chance to find out where or what, for that matter, she'd be doing.
At times, he found himself drawing her like she was there. And she was, sorta. He understood where she was coming from. Lily wanted him to figure out where he belonged before she could find a way to fit herself into his life; he got that It's just that it was such the unfair advantage that she knew where he was, but he didn't know a single thing about what was going on in her life.
Did she decide to follow her dream to be a teacher? He could hardly imagine her teach in front of a crowd of people. But he thought again about it more and figured, she could teach children. She seem to have a knack with children.
Snapping out of his thoughts, he was back in the present.
"And.. we're done for today. Great job, Al!" Jamie said walking around to view everyone's work.
"You were thinking about her again, weren't you?"
"Can you blame me?"
"Pretty lady like that, of course I can't. She call you yet?"
"Not yet..."
"Your grand opening is soon isn't it?"
"In a few week's time."
"Have you sent her the invitation?"
"I wouldn't know where to send it," he frowned.
"She's got friends..."
"Good point."
"And she promised she'd go."
"I don't know that she promised."
"You know she'd want to see it."
"I hope so, Al."
"Have faith."
"I have hope..."
The elder patted his friend on the back.
"Well then, send that invite out already!"
"I will, Al. I will."
Later that night, he decided to act on it and deliver the card to Winnie's place.
He rang the doorbell.
He heard feet pad towards him.
Someone peeped through the window and opened the door.
"Jamie! So nice to see you!"
"Hi Winnie. I just came here to give you an invite to my exhibit that's opening up soon."
Looking very pleased, she accepted the invitation.
"Umm... Winnie... Have you talked to Lily, lately? Is she alright?"
"I've only talked to her a couple times. She's fine, darlin'. A bit busy but she's fine."
Relief washed across his face so openly, it made Winnie want to cry. But then again, everything made her want to cry. So early in her pregnancy and she was feeling a bit over hormonal.
"If you see her, will you give her this?"
He offered another envelope with the words 'To My Lily' on it.
"Of course I will."
"Do you think she'll come?"
Winnie shrugged her shoulders.
"I really can't say..."
Disappointment.
"But what I can say is..." she added and continued when he looked up at her face, "have some faith."
"I have hope," he replied.
"Just know that she thinks about you."
"Thanks Win..." he said as he turned and walked away.
Ten minutes after opening the envelope Jamie gave her, telling her hubby about its contents and grabbing the phone to call her best cousin, she was licking the stamp and writing Lily's address on the other envelope.
This has to go in the mail tonight, Winnie thought. The earlier, the better.
In one of her stubborn moods, she got Danny to drive her to the nearest mail box to drop off the invite and a 24hr grocery store to buy some chocolate ice cream. Boy, was she was craving.
There better be a happy ending to this story, she thought to herself.
Meanwhile, a few cities away, Lily's was excited, nervous and anxious.
After getting the call from Winnie about Jamie's show, she couldn't help but feel proud and excited for him. He's finally completed a set. Hopefully he gets the recognition he deserves with his pieces, knowing how much time and effort he poured into each work of art.
Lily was also nervous because she didn't know how he felt, anymore. She was a wreck whenever she was given free time to think. Her thoughts always wound up moving in the same direction; towards Jamie. She didn't know how she found the control to stop herself from calling Jamie. The few time she did give in to calling, he thankfully wasn't home. Lily was sure Libby wouldn't pass along the news she had called, anyway.
At times, she would imagine he hated her for cutting him off. Other times she hoped he was still there waiting as intently as she was. They needed space to organize their lives, first. His mother had given her a big ball of inspiration and so did he, more so. To be able to attempt living a dream and having people convince you that it's worth a shot; that you're worth it. Trial and error. She was told, having spoken with her family beforehand, that she would have a roof over her head no matter what the outcome. Never would she have dreamed to take a step forward into a part of the world she always told herself was unreachable. But here she was, doing something she always dreamed of doing.
Her classes were tough but she was getting the hang of it. Her pupils were very talented and she hoped she was helping bring out more of that talent. She wasn't too confident, yet.
When she dreamt of being a teacher, she didn't have any specifics on what she would teach. Given that her greatest passion, if she ever had one, was singing, she thought it would be a perfect subject to focus on. When she found a school for vocal teachers, she thought she'd give it a try. It wouldn't hurt at all.
It's an experience worth pursuing for her sake.
What was another month of training?
Suddenly, the door burst open and her flat mate dramatically walked in.
"Oh, Lily pad!"
"Hi, Bobby!" she ignored his dramatic entrance and grinned as she thought of Jamie.
"You seem... happy..." he said noting the wide grin on her face.
"I am," she said turning her cheek as he bent down to kiss her.
"How was everything at the shop?"
"I don't know that I can keep up with these people that work with me."
"They're that good?"
"They're horrible. Such slobs. Don't know. I think I'm in the wrong field," he said as he meticulously cleaned the surface of the kitchen counter. Out of frustration he began cleaning everything in sight.
Lily just chuckled. He was at it again.
Bobby was definitely a different character. She learned that earlier when she first got into town and found him at the coffee shop crying his eyes out.
He was a Barrista at a high-end coffee shop when they met. It was her first stop in the city she had only visited a few times. As she was trying to figure out where to stay, Bobby fell into her lap - so to speak.
Bobby was having a slightly heated argument with whoever was on the phone. By the end of the phone call, it was revealed that his roommate left him for someone else. Now, he needed a new flat mate because the new month was starting and he couldn't afford it all by himself.
When Lily heard this, she knew she had to take this opportunity. Of course with the clause that they have a test run first, to which he agreed on because he was very "choosy" like that. His word, not hers.
After the first week, Bobby decided he liked her because of her un-diva-like qualities and agreed that she could stay as his flatmate for the six months she needed the room.
