Heliotropes are plants that belong to the genus Heliotropium and family Boraginaceae. This genus consists of around 350 species of flowering plants that are commonly known as heliotropes. These plants have long been associated with the traditional cottage gardens, moon gardens, etc. but, they are still very popular for their showy and fragrant flowers. The most commonly found heliotropes produce purple, blue or white flowers in small clusters. The plant got its name (heliotrope) from the nature of its leaves that turn towards the sun. If you notice this plant, you can see that the leaves and flowers turn towards the sun all day and faces the east, the next morning. The word Helios in Greek means sun and tropein means to turn. So, this plant is also known as turnsole or cherry pie plant. The flowers in clusters develop during spring and last till fall.

Even though there are various species of heliotropes, the most common one is a tropical flowering plant, that can grow to a maximum height of around 40 inches. It has dark green crinkled leaves and the flowers are deep purple in color. There are many other varieties that produce, blue, white, pink and pale purple flowers. The common heliotrope plant has a strong aroma that is compared to apple pie and vanilla. This plant can be grown in containers, hanging baskets or in pots. Heliotrope plant is easy to take care of, but it requires plenty of sunlight and a well-moist soil.

Apart from that, the flowers last longer, as compared to some other plants. Heliotrope flowers are also known as cherry pie flowers. The heliotrope flower denotes devotion and so it can be used as a symbol of devotion. Flowers are also dedicated to particular dates and heliotrope is associated with March 1.

In short, heliotrope plants can be a beautiful addition to any flower garden. If you are interested in growing heliotrope flowers, plant a few in your garden and enjoy the color and fragrance. However, make sure that the plant gets good sun throughout the day. It is better to plant them in well-drained soil, but, always keep the soil moist. You may use a water-soluble fertilizers once a month. If you want a bushy appearance for your heliotrope plant, you can nip off the tips, which will increase the flower production too. Pinch off the tips to stimulate growth. In case of cold weather, mulching is beneficial for outdoor heliotropes. Even though, this plant is free of pests, beware of mildew, which can be countered by removing the affected leaves.
