Heidi Klum and Seal Announce Plans to Divorce
Heidi Klum and Seal issued a joint statement that the couple is separating and filing for divorce after seven years of marriage.
Even the most solid celebrity marriages are difficult to maintain. Heidi Klum and Seal were a rare example of a celebrity marriage that appeared to work. The couple had three of their own children and Seal had adopted a 7-year-old daughter that Klum had from a previous relationship. All seemed to be great for the family, often seen vacationing together. Seal and Heidi renewed their vows every year around the time of their anniversary and seemed to genuinely be in love with one another - at least as seen through the lens of the entertainment media.
The joint statement from the couple read: "While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul searching we have decided to separate. We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children's sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy."
And with the news, of course, comes the onslaught of Internet "commenters" who feel like the couple should try harder to make their marriage work. After all, marriage is a sacred union and must be adhered to at all costs - or so the thinking goes. The reality is that marriage is an imperfect social mechanism for people to define their love for one another. Even when children are present, it's difficult to make an argument that a couple should stay together even if they are no longer happy in the marriage. An amicably separated mother and father are going to be much better parents to their children than a couple who are forcing themselves to stay together simply to avoid the difficult transition of divorce and living apart.
