Heating and Cooling Systems - How They Work

Maintenance of optimum temperatures is essential in heating and cooling systems. Knowing their mechanics of working may help you save time as well as money.
Man has made many innovations, which have improved his quality of life. One such advancement is heating and cooling systems. We depend on heating systems to maintain the temperature of the room warm in the winters. While, in the summer, we depend on the cooling system for maintaining the temperature of the room at a low-level. At times, we tend to take these equipment for granted, which can lead to their damage. If we take proper care of these systems, then we can save a lot on its servicing costs. Knowing the basic working of these systems, might help in taking proper care of these heating and cooling systems. How they work and how you can maintain them is discussed herein.

How do Heating and Cooling Systems Work?

Almost all the temperature control devices are embedded with three basic components; namely, a source of warm or cool air, a controller for regulating the system and another controller for distributing the air evenly to the rooms.

Working of Cooling System
The cooling systems, like air conditioners, contain refrigerants or freon which helps to cool down the air which is present inside the system's coil. The refrigerant or freon is converted into hot and high pressure gas, with the help of the compressor. Then, this hot and high pressured gas passes through the coils and condenses into hot liquid. This liquid expands, thus, becoming cold. While expanding, it absorbs heat and again goes back to the compressor, thus repeating the cycle. The fans and motors present in the cooling system pump the cold air to the room, in order to make the room cool.

Working of Heating System
The heating system works in a similar way as the cooling system but, instead of extracting hot air and pumping cold air, it takes in cold air and pumps out hot air. This will help in increasing the temperature of the room, thus making it warm. Heat strips is another kind of heating system, which consists of fans and other heating elements, which help in pumping heat into the room. Another kind of heating system makes use of a boiler, which is fixed at the basement of the house. Water is heated and via the radiators, the stream is sent to the homes. In some cases, the basement of the house is also fitted with a furnace. In such cases, the air is heated and then via the air ducts, the air is pumped into the house.

The cost of both these systems is almost the same and most of their working strategy is similar. Heat pumps are devices which can be used as a heating as well as cooling system. Efficiency is also observed in these systems; hence, you can buy one for your house if you do not have it.
