Heath Ledger Wins Posthumous Globe, Slumdog Hits it Big

The relatively unknown Bollywood film "Slumdog Millionaire" won four Golden Globes as Heath Ledger received a posthumous award.
Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental drug overdose of prescription drugs on January 22, 2008, was awarded a posthumous Golden Globe award for his role as the Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight," raising the possibility that he’ll be only the second actor ever to win a posthumous Oscar. Christopher Nolan, the director of the "The Dark Knight," accepted the award on Ledger’s behalf and noted, "All of us who worked with Heath on ‘The Dark Knight’ accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride. After Heath passed, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema."

While Ledger was the big story, the Bollywood film "Slumdog Millionaire" came away as the big winner, receiving 4 Golden Globes. Co-star Freida Pinto was beside herself with glee as the night wound down, exclaiming at one point, "Is this really happening to me? My first film wins four Golden Globes? I just can’t believe it." To win the best-drama award, "Slumdog" had to overcome "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Frost/Nixon" and "Revolutionary Road."

Other stories to emerge from the night included Kate Winslet expounding on her role in "Revolutionary Road," a film in which she reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio and worked under the direction of her husband, Sam Mendes. To DiCaprio, Winslet noted, "I’ve loved you for 13 years and your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular." To her husband, Winslet said, "Thank you for directing this film, babe, and thank you for killing us every single day and really enjoying us actually being in such horrific pain."
