Heath Ledger, Penelope Cruz Win Best Supporting Oscars
Heath Ledger wins a posthumous Oscar for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight and Penelope Cruz wins her first Oscar for VIcky Cristina Barcelona.
There were other winners, of course, and the biggest winner was Slumdog Millionaire, bring home a total of 8 Oscars. Some fan favorites like Mickey Rourke and the Wrestler left empty-handed, but they definitely left their mark on the event.
It was the first, long-awaited Oscar win for Kate Winslet, in a movie that seemingly no one has actually seen, the Reader. Best actor went to Sean Penn for his performance as Harvey Milk - somewhat of a disappointment given the hype surrounding Mickey Rourke's comeback. But there is no doubt that Penn's performance was more than Oscar-worthy.
Hugh Jackman hosted the show and his opening song number was tolerable, if not very much of anything else. The surprise addition of Anne Hathaway helped to add a little spark to the routine - and Jackman overall was likable and fun throughout the performance, if not with the sharp wit of previous hosts.
In contrast to years' past, there were no political speeches made and most of the acceptance speeches were courteous and appropriate. Heath Ledger's family accepted the award on behalf of his daughter Matilda, with his sister speaking briefly about how proud they all are of his work. Penelope Cruz also offered heartfelt words during her acceptance, eventually speaking briefly in Spanish to help convey her message to friends and family at home.
