Hearts will Make that Empty Sound - Chapter 23

True love is something that comes easy.
Jennifer's POV

"Don't forget about me." I whispered into Conor's ear as we hugged on last time. He drew his head back slightly just to engulf my lips with his own, but just as fast as it started, he pulled away.

"I won't if you don't. See ya." He smiled sadly and walked off with his Duffle bag slung over his shoulder. Ashley stepped up from behind me where she'd been waiting and put her arm over my shoulders. "If it's meant to be, you guys will be ok." She smiled reassuringly and started pulling me toward the exit where Jay was waiting with the car. He's not one for goodbyes so he stayed outside.

"What do you say we hang out today? Jay can do without us for one day, and you could use some new clothes." She smirked making me laugh; and fall into her trap. We walked together out to where Jay was waiting and I climbed into the backseat where just a week ago Conor and I held hands for the first time. I know it sounds crazy, but maybe we will work. Maybe we'll get our happier ever after, and maybe it will be perfect.

Before Jay could start the engine, I heard someone yelling through the doors and when they slid open Conor came running out. "Jennifer!" He yelled again when he saw the car, "I don't want to leave." He whispered after I crawled out of the car.

"I know I don't want you to, but you're going to miss your flight." I tried reasoning but he pulled me into him again. His mouth covered mine and the kiss felt like not only "Goodbye," but like the start of something new that would last. His tongue searched for an opening into my mouth, and slid between my lips so our tongues were dancing together. Yet another kiss that sets my world on fire.

Conor's POV

I know it's relatively stupid to spend $200 on a plane ticket and then miss the flight by going back to kiss my girlfriend, but this kiss is worth it. Jennifer's arms hooked themselves around my neck, pulling us closer together. We both pulled back at the same time, gasping for breath, and we locked eye contact. "That was..." She whispered breathlessly.

"Amazing," I finished for her and kissed her mouth lightly again. "Now I really have to go, but I'll see you soon. I... Umm... Love you." I blurted out nervously. Damn! I probably shouldn't have said that. Jennifer looked down at the ground, with a crimson red growing on her cheeks, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

"No, it's ok." She spoke up and looked back into my eyes, "I like you, Conor, but I just don't know yet... With everything that's gone on with me in the last few years I don't know anything anymore." Her eyes were filled with tears as she spoke, "But I really like you." She added but paused like she would say something else.

I pulled back slightly so my hands are on her hips and interrupted, "You don't have to say it back. I can wait for you; I get that you want this to go slow Emotionally, and I'm ok with that. Now I really have to go." I sighed and kissed her once more. "Bye." We both whispered as I turned back toward the entrance toward the airport.

I heard Jennifer slam her door shut, so I turned back in time to see the car pulling away and a tear rolling down her cheek. I watched as the car sped out of the unloading zone before finally heading toward the entrance.

Jay's POV

We pulled out of the airport parking lot, and looking in the rear view mirror I saw silent tears rolling down Jennifer's cheek. She must've sensed me looking at her, because our eyes met in the reflection. "You're ok?" I asked quietly.

With one more glance at Jen in the mirror, I saw her close her eyes and take a deep breath before replying, "Yeah, I'll be fine." Ashley glanced over at me sympathetically, and we obviously both knew Jennifer lied. "Babe, let's stop and get breakfast, I'm starving!" Ashley intervened, trying to lighten the mood. She's really good at that; making things less awkward. I guess it's her happy personality that makes everyone like her, and I'm not sure she's ever had any real drama with people because she's so laid back, "Let's go to that one place with the really good omelets!" She offered, referring to Jennifer's favorite restaurant.

"Ok, that sounds great." I smiled at her thankfully. Seriously, I have the best girlfriend I could ask for.

Jeremy's POV

"Dude, she really left, and I have things to do, so you need to go and grow up. Maybe if you wouldn't have been a dick and cheated on her, then you could've worked. Bye." Ryan spoke quickly and slammed the door in my face. Why does no one believe that I love her? I do, I just made a lot of mistakes. And now she's gone. Maybe I'll find a way to make this work, and get her back... But first I need a plan.
Who should Jennifer choose?
Conor.
Jeremy.
