Hearing Loss Treatment
Hearing loss treatment depends upon the severity of the condition; whether it is reversible, temporary or permanent. Read to know more.
Conductive Hearing Loss Treatment
Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is interference in the transmission of sound to the inner ear. For conductive hearing loss treatment, hearing aids such as BTE (behind the ear type) works well, and patients have received effective results from using the hearing aid. Other than hearing aids, surgical procedure is also recommended for such kind of hearing loss treatment. However, doctors recommend for a surgery only when hearing does not show any kind of improvement after using hearing aids.
High Frequency Hearing Loss Treatment
People who suffer from this kind of hearing loss, lose the ability to hear sounds of higher pitches; women's or children's voice for example, and certain parts of speech such as consonants. This disorder makes it difficult for the affected people to hear amid background noise. Unlike conventional hearing aids, digitally-manufactured aids have shown great improvements in high frequency hearing loss treatment. The open-fit hearing aid, for example, is a popular tool for treating such a kind of disorder.
Noise Induced Hearing Loss Treatment
As the name suggests, Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL), is caused by exposure to harmful noise that can damage the delicate structures (hair cells) of hearing. Explosion or continuous exposure to loud sounds, result in NIHL. Noise induced hearing loss treatment has shown unsatisfactory results in medical science. However, avoiding exposure to loud noise is the best way to prevent NIHL. Certain earplugs and earmuffs are available that can decease noise exposure level by over 20db and prevent such types of chronic hearing impairments.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treatment
This type of hearing loss is considered as idiopathic medical condition. However, some of the possible causes of sensorineural hearing loss are age, heredity, physical and environmental factors. Viral infections such as influenza, rubella, mumps, herpes, etc may also be responsible for causing this disorder. Apart from these, vascular diseases such as leukemia, anemia and autoimmune disease such as lupus may also be some of the possible causes. Proper types of hearing aids or cochlear implants are generally advised for treating sensorineural hearing loss.
Prevention of Hearing Loss
It is unlikely to avoid all kinds of noises, however, you can take measures to reduce the harmful effects of loud noises. Knowing about situations that create harmful noise levels can help in avoiding the exposure, and hence the ill effects. In cases where exposure to loud noises cannot be avoided, wearing hearing protectors can be of great aid to your ears. For people who constantly work with noisy appliances like lawn mowers, power tools, chain saws and the likes, must ensure that they wear ear covers like earplugs or earmuffs while working.
For children especially, avoid giving them noisy toys or appliances. Kids have a lower tolerance to loud noises, and thus can easily fall prey to hearing defects. Protect your kids and yourselves by keeping down the volume of your television and other musical instruments at a safe level. Particular care has to be taken while listening to musical devices using earphones. People having a habit of listening to extremely loud music, might not realize its ill effects on their hearing ability, as the effect progresses at a gradual rate.
If you have a cold, take care that you do not blow your noise too hard, as this might rupture the sensitive parts of the ear. Blow your nose gently and through both the nostrils. While cleaning your ears, always use recommended items that are prescribed by doctors. It is also equally important to prevent any kind of head or ear injuries, as these might also lead to temporary or permanent ear problems.
Hearing loss treatment basically includes the use of hearing aids available for different types of hearing loss. As described above, induced hearing loss has no effective treatment and it is a severe kind of hearing loss. Hearing loss can cause serious disturbances in a person's social life and finally in his behavior. So it is always better to take all possible steps to prevent any kind of exposure to loud and harmful noise.
