Hearing Aids for Children
Is your child suffering from hearing loss and you want to buy a hearing aid for him or her, but do not which and how to go about it? Then, read this article which will give you sufficient information about hearing aids for children.
Hearing plays as important role in the development of a child. If the child is suffering from hearing loss, it does not mean that the sound waves do not reach the ear at all. The sound waves enter the ear but, the signals tranmitted by the ear drum through the auditory nerve are weak and distorted. If a child is suffering from hearing loss, hearing aids can help him or her in improving the quality of the signals transmitted in order to hear better. With hearing aids, these signals or waves become loud and strong hence, the signals traveling to the ear become easy to understand. Let's now take a look at a few of the best types of hearing aids for children, their functioning, and how does each one differ from the other.
How do Hearing Aids Work
Hearing aids are grafted with a microphone which help pick up a sound. A digital processor or amplifier makes the sounds strong and loud by amplifying them, which travels through a tube into a fitted the ear-mold in the child's ear. In a BTE hearing aid(behind the ear), the microphone and amplifier are placed in a small plastic case which rests behind the ear. BTE's are most suitable in aiding hearing loss in children.
How to Use Hearing Aids
Most of the times, children cannot remove or put back the hearing aid hence, adults should help them do this till they become mature enough to do it themselves. Taking care of hearing aids involves cleaning ear wax, changing the batteries and performing hearing checks at different levels of the volume control. If you have any doubts, you can always refer to an audiologist. The audiologist will help you select a hearing aid which suits your child best. As the size of the child's ear grows, you will have to refit or remake the ear-molds. You may also have to replace the whole hearing aid. At times, changes in the hearing level of the child will require you to adjust the volume, or replace the hearing aid.
Things to be Considered Before Buying a Hearing Aid
Many factors should be considered before buying a hearing aid.
- The type of hearing loss your child is suffering from and also considering the ear infections and ear problems that your child can be susceptible to.
- Degree of hearing loss, that is, to what extent has your child lost his sense of hearing.
- The child's general ability and activity level in the sense, the hearing aid should be resistant to dust particles and moisture and also should be robust.
- Your child's preference in color should be considered before buying one, so that you can buy one of that color.
- Check if the hearing aid has audio ports which can hook up to radio transmissions in the classroom.
There are different types of hearing aids for children that are available nowadays, however, you need to weigh the advantages with the disadvantages, which are as varied as the hearing loss causes themselves, and only then go for one that is most suitable for your child. The most common types are:
Completely In Canal (CIC)
These are the smallest devices currently available in the market. They can be easily fixed in the ear canal and are almost invisible. The child though, needs to possess big ears to accommodate this hearing aid. People suffering with severe hearing loss should not opt for this kind of equipment.
In The Canal (ITC)
They are easy to handle and are big in size. These kind of machines have more features and are grafted with large sound amplifiers. Children with varying degrees of hearing loss can opt for this.
Behind The Ear (BTE)
This is embedded with an electronic case and fits behind the ear. It consists of a tube which carries sound from the outside environment to the ear. This hearing aid machine can match the color of the child's skin and also his or her hair color and hence, can prove to be the best hearing aid for children.
Hearing aids for children are expensive devices thus prompting many companies to make provisions for hearing aid insurance in case of damage or faults, which has proved to be very helpful.
