Chocolate chip cookies can also be made using healthy ingredients. Although the cookies may not be a real substitute for Brussels sprouts, they can certainly be made more healthier as compared to other unhealthy food we keep eating all the time. Many times, you may come across cookies in the market labeled as 'healthy', but they may not be as healthy as they are labeled, as the sugar content in them is always on the higher side. However, there are many healthy ingredients which can be used to make cookies, such as healthy oatmeal, bran flakes, nuts, whole wheat flour, etc. You will also be able to reduce the fat content in the cookies. How to Make Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookies

There are number of chocolate chip cookie recipes which you will come across. Below you will find some recipes which are an all time favorite with me, as they are healthy and also soothe the taste buds.

Heart Healthy Cookie Recipe
This recipe is a heart healthy recipe, as the total quantity of butter has been replaced with half butter and half applesauce. Moreover, it also has the goodness of whole wheat flour and wheat germ in it.

Ingredients
  • Whole Wheat Flour 2 cups
  • Wheat Germ ¼ cup
  • Baking Soda 1 teaspoon
  • Butter ½ cup
  • Applesauce ½ cup
  • White Sugar 2/3 cup
  • Brown Sugar 2/3 cup
  • Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon
  • Egg 1
  • Egg White 1
  • Dark Chocolate Chips 8 oz
Method
  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
  • Mix wheat flour, wheat germ and baking soda in a bowl and keep it aside.
  • With a hand mixer beat butter, applesauce and sugar together, till all the ingredients are well blended.
  • Then add in vanilla, egg and egg white to the butter mixture and mix well.
  • Now add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and mix well till a soft dough is formed.
  • At last add chocolate chips to the dough.
  • Make cookies with rounded tablespoons and place the cookies on the cookie sheet.
  • Bake the cookies for about 10 minutes, by alternating the cookie sheets halfway.
  • Once the edges of the cookies are lightly browned, understand that the cookies are ready to be savored.
Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
Oatmeal in the cookies gives you the fiber which is required and you will not feel guilty eating those cookies. This recipe varies from the heart healthy chocolate chip cookie in that, canola oil is also used in the making of this recipe.

Ingredients
  • Rolled Oats (not the quick cooking) ¾ cup
  • Whole Wheat Flour 1 cup
  • Baking Soda ½ teaspoon
  • Salt ½ teaspoon
  • Butter (softened) ¼ cup
  • Canola Oil ¼ cup
  • Granulated Sugar 1/3 cup
  • Brown Sugar 1/3 cup
  • Egg 1
  • Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon
  • Chocolate Chips 1 cup
Method
  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While the oven is heating up, coat 2 cookie sheets with cooking spray.
  • Grind the oats in a blender and then transfer them to a bowl.
  • To the oatmeal add whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt, and mix well.
  • In a different bowl beat the butter till it is nice and fluffy.
  • Then add canola oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg and vanilla to the butter and beat well again till it is smooth and creamy in consistency.
  • Keep the mixer running and slowly add dry ingredients to the butter mix and keep beating on low speed.
  • Once soft dough is formed, stir in chocolate chips to the dough.
  • Then drop dough by heaping teaspoons of dough on the cookie sheet.
  • Bake one sheet at a time and it will take about 10 to 15 minutes for the edges to become brown and the top is golden in color.
  • Let the cookies cool completely.
In a similar way, you can also make healthy chocolate chip cookie bars. These chocolate chip cookies can be stored in air tight containers for up to three days. They can also be stored in the refrigerator for a longer period of time, however I prefer to make the cookies fresh using the chocolate chip cookie recipe, as compared to eating stored cookies.
