Headstone Designs

Having customized headstone designs to commemorate the death of a near and dear one always adds a special touch. Unique headstones speak volumes about the deceased person's nature and personality.
Known also as grave markers, tomb stones, gravestones, memorial stones, etc. headstones have been around ever since people began to mark the burial sites of their near and dear ones. While some consider it a waste to spend a lot of money on the burial site after the person is dead, some believe it's the only way to show how valuable and precious the person who passed away was to them. For several generations, people have used standard headstones coming in standard designs and shapes, however, these days the trend has shifted. More and more folks are taking special interest in choosing memorial headstone designs for the tomb of their loved one. In fact, some even design their own headstones for their tombs.

Designing a Headstone

While choosing the perfect headstone for ones loved one, there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration. These factors combined will give you the perfect headstones design for commemorating the death of your loved one.

Personality

The personality of the person, his or her likes need to be primarily taken into account while determining the headstone design. For example, if the person was a huge fan of F1, have an F1 car as the headstone design or if the person loved his or her pet, have the picture of the pet engraved on the tombstone. Thus, depending on what the person was passionate about in life, the headstone design will vary. For an infant, one can have teddy bears or noddy car shaped headstones or preferably the toy the little one clung onto all the time. Custom headstone designs always speak more about the person and are great ideas for headstones.

Headstone Material

There are two popularly used headstone materials: granite and bronze. For those who like the look of stone, granite is the answer. Jet black granite headstones with laser etchings are also popularly selected today. One can have a hand etched portrait of the person done on the gravestone. Granite is also available in ray, blue, mahogany, rose and red onto which various designs of your choice, such as a lighthouse seen, a ship, a cross, a rose, etc., can be etched, thereby making a great design for a headstone. For those who like a metallic look, there's the bronze headstones that capture fine details as compared to granite.

Cost

The cost of the headstone also needs to be taken into consideration. It's nice to be really creative with headstone design, however, we cannot neglect the fact that innovative designs come at a higher price as well. You need to consider how much money you want to spend on the headstone. As compared to granite headstones, bronze headstones will prove to be on the expensive side. Then again, the more complex and intricate the design, the higher will be the cost. Custom designs will always prove more expensive than the standard ones. Moreover, several people do not like to spend lots of money on their tomb or burial site, instead prefer the money to be given to the poor and needy. Thus, it depends on how much money the deceased person wanted to be spent on the tombstone and your personal headstone budget.

Having customized, unique headstone designs is a good idea, because it totally reflects the personality of the person and keeps what was unique about him or her standing out. Anybody visiting the grave will know from one look at the gravestone, that the person buried here was a passionate musician, nature lover, artist, cook, etc. Don't forget to include an epitaph to complement the headstone design!
