Heal lice are parasites that feed on extremely small amounts of blood drawn from the scalp of the human head. They are not considered to spread fatal diseases, however, these parasites are contagious and at times can be frustratingly annoying. A lice on a child's scalp may cause itchiness or inflammation from its bite. If left untreated, persistent scratching may lead to skin irritation and eventually infection. Head lice home remedies should be immediately initiated as soon as you notice head lice symptoms or the lice themselves. These parasites, although very tiny are still visible to the naked eye. Juice extracted from a fresh onion has been adopted in several head lice home remedies. Apply the juice daily on the scalp and let it stay and spread for 3 to 4 hours. Thereafter, shampoo the hair with lukewarm water and rinse.

A powder made from raw custard apple and its seeds can be applied on the scalp before going to bed everyday and have the head washed the next morning. Alternatively, the same powder can be mixed with water to form a thick paste and apply it in the same way. This is an effective method among all the home remedies for head lice and nits and is also a beneficial treatment for dandruff.

Essential oils such as tea tree oil and others when used for massaging the head thoroughly, helps in eliminating the lice and also maintaining the health of the hair. A mix of water and vinegar is also used by many, by applying the mixture on the scalp and keeping it overnight.

Some head lice removal home remedies include the use of peppermint oil mixed with shampoo for hair wash. Not only does this mixture kills live bugs on the head but it also prevents any such infestation from recurring in future. Peppermint oil also produces a cooling and a soothing effect after the shower.

Use of garlic clove paste and lemon juice is another tip for home remedies for killing head lice. Administer the mixture into the scalp through a good massage every night and have a proper head wash the following day. The mixture will produce a pungent smell that is enough to kill lice overnight and a good shower will clean the hair of their dead bodies.

Coconut oil has been known for its anti-microbial properties. This oil can be used to make a mixture with camphor powder and applied every night on the scalp. Do not forget to shampoo your hair the next morning. Use of coconut oil has shown good result in several home remedies for head lice removal.

After washing your head, leave the hair wet and use a lice comb. This type of a comb has very less space in between the spikes and so is effective in getting rid of head lice. Keeping the hair wet or preferably oily, helps to make combing easier and it also temporarily demobilizes the parasites. Take care that the same comb is not used by anyone else, lest they also be at risk of infestation.

Instead of using medicated lice treatments, it is preferable to employ home remedies for getting rid of head lice, particularly when it comes to children. They have sensitive skin and are more vulnerable to skin damages that may occur due to certain medicines. So, for adults and especially for kids, it is best and safer to opt for different home remedies for treating head lice.

In case of very young children, it is advisable to consult a doctor before you begin implementing such head lice home remedies. This is because you never know in what way their sensitive skin might react to such treatments. Lack of hygiene is mainly responsible for head lice infestation. So, it is important to wash your head everyday and especially when you return home from crowded places. Avoid sharing combs, hats, caps and hairbrushes with other people and keep your hair neat and tidy.
