Head Cold Treatment

Medications and home remedies can be used to treat head cold. Here is more information on different treatment methods to cure this condition.
Head cold, commonly known as 'common cold', is an infection of the upper respiratory tract caused due to virus. It can be caused due to nearly 200 different types of viruses. The condition is called so as only the parts related to the head are affected due to it. It is usually experienced in winter and commonly found in children and infants. This is because children have a weak immune system and those with a weak immune system contract this disease immediately.

Symptoms of this condition include runny nose, headache, low-grade fever, nasal congestion, constant sneezing, sore throat, watery eyes and a general feeling of being unwell. Although in most of the cases, one can get rid of the condition in itself within a couple of days; treatment is required to alleviate the symptoms and get relief immediately.

Treating Head Cold with Medications

There are numerous medications that help in treating headache and cold quickly. In order to get rid of the cough, you can go for cough suppressant that can be obtained over-the-counter. Secondly, cough syrups, lozenges, expectorant cough medicines can be used to clear cough. Nasal congestion can be treated with the help of decongestants and sprays which help in flushing out the mucus from the nose and help relieve the symptoms. On the other hand, there are several medications like painkillers that can help in treating headache. Using a eucalyptus or a menthol salve is also one of the best head cold treatment method. Apart from these, there are several natural remedies that can be used to cure this condition. Let us take a look at them in detail.

Natural Remedies for Head Cold
  • Gargling with salt water is one of the best natural remedy to cure sore throat and irritation. Just add a pinch of salt to one cup of lukewarm water and gargle 2-3 times a day.
  • Having hot drinks and soups help in relieving nasal congestion. You can have chicken or some other hot soup, or have hot tea to treat stuffiness in the nose and get relief from throat infection.
  • Hot tea has been used since ancient times for common cold treatment. You can add 2-3 slices of ginger to tea while boiling and have this ginger tea 1-2 times a day. Or prepare tea with 1 teaspoon honey, lemon and drink it without milk.
  • You should add a pinch of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk and have it. This will help in treatment as well as prevention of cold.
  • Lastly, inhaling steam by adding 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil in the hot water can help in treating nasal congestion as well as headache.
Apart from these treatment and remedies, it is essential to take complete rest for bed rest for at least one day to get rid of the viral infection fast. Similarly, one should have good amounts of fluids and water to prevent dehydration and get quick relief. Applying cold or hot compresses can also help to clear congestion. Lastly, one should note that viral infection is contagious and hence, it is advisable to keep babies and children away from the person suffering from it. If a child suffers from it, he should be made to stay away from other children to prevent the spread of infection.

You can use either of these remedies to treat sore throat, nasal congestion, etc. at home. However, in case some other symptoms are observed, it is better to consult the doctor immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.
