High-definition television, abbreviated as HDTV, refers to television with high resolution video as compared to the standard-definition television (or SDTV). The difference between the two concepts is quite significant, as HDTV has one or two million pixels per frame - which is five times the number of pixels per frame in SDTV. When HDTV technology was introduced, it was primarily dependent on analog technique for broadcasting. More recently, however, it has undergone a vast change and digital broadcasting is just one of the many attributes which gives new HD technology an edge over its SD counterpart.

How Does HDTV Work?

The superior quality picture that the latest HD technology boasts of can be attributed to the digital signals in pattern of 1s and 2s that are used for broadcasting. In terms of aspect ratio, HDTV again scores over SDTV with an aspect ratio of 16:9 as opposed to SDTVs aspect ratio of 4:3. As opposed to the progressive scanning system used in SDTV, HDTV resorts to interlaced scanning system which reduces flicker and adds to picture quality.

That being said, it's a common misconception that simply buying an HDTV would give you access to high-definition picture. The fact is that buying an HD television set only means half the work done, as you will require HD quality content to view on that HDTV set. You must have noticed that the list of TV channels offered by your cable TV or satellite TV service provider are categorized into HDTV channels and standard TV channels. After you buy an HDTV, you will have to subscribe to these channels (or other sources of HD content) to get the best possible results. Most of the service providers today provide a set-top box to their subscribers to give them access to HDTV channels.
