Hardaway, Houston, Miller; Comebacks to the NBA- is this what the NBA needs right now?
Legendary players making a comeback
Three veterans, three extremely talented pro players, three retired players who are known today as the best of the best, are three examples of what a true franchise player is made of. Penny Hardaway, Allen Houston, Reggie Miller famously known within the NBA, decided it was time to hang up their jerseys a couple of years ago, however, just recently those same jerseys are calling for a comeback. That's right, it is true, that these three legendary players are planning a comeback to the NBA. Will the comeback ruin their reputation or will it make their careers more flawless? Will their respect as legends fall off because of their comeback?
Let's talk sports:
Penny Hardaway - Guard/ forward, legendary player, played in the NBA for
13 seasons, double-scoring in all but 2 of his 64 post season games, and 40 points in two playoff games. Penny played with the Orlando Magic, New York Knicks, and the Phoenix Suns.
He took on a job with TNT as a sports analyst and after two years he ha decided to return to the NBA to play against Shaq, one of his teammates back when he was the star player with the Magic. Why is Hardaway coming back to the NBA? To prove what? Is it that a franchise player no matter what their age, in their minds and body, the feeling of playing never leaves their soul? It can't be about the money, legendary players play for the love of the game, not for the love of the money unlike the new jacks of the NBA.
Allen Houston - Guard, another legendary player. 12 seasons with the NBA, averaging 17 points per game with the exception of his last season before retirement. His shooting percentage was 40.2 within the 3 point range (his specialty). He is placed 9th for most 3 pointers in NBA history. Played with the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks and retired in 2005 with the Knicks. His physical status forced him to retire, but after two years of rest, he feels his body is up for the challenge. He announced his comeback and is waiting on offers. Why is Houston coming back to play again? To prove he still got it and might even be better now after his two year absence?????? Maybe. Should Houston play again for New York, or will he be better off with a new start, new beginning, new coach, and new team members? We’ll be watching your performance Houston.
Reggie Miller - Guard, one of the best legendary NBA players. His career as an NBA player was full of desire, dedication, focus, and phenomenal achievement. He appreciated his talent/job. He loved doing what he did, which was playing hard in the court. Miller played in the NBA for 13 seasons with one team only, (Indiana Pacers). He loved his team, teammates and coaches. Miller scored 57 points (his career high) against Charlotte in 1992. Miller ranks #1 in 3 point shooting in NBA history with a total of 2,560 before retiring. At the end of the 2005 season, Miller decided it was time to retire (hang up that jersey). He left with much satisfaction regarding the work he did for the Indiana Pacers even though one thing was still missing (the championship ring). He felt he had to be content with the fact that his work was about done, he did all he could to win that championship ring, but due to limited luck, no ring was ever visible. Moving on to the next chapter of his life as a sports analyst, he seems content again with his recent job with the TNT network. However, two years later he ha been approached about a comeback. Now, the interesting part of this possible comeback is not Reggie Miller, is that his comeback has to do with him playing for the Boston Celtics, not the Pacers. Why Boston? Will Reggie comeback? What will he prove this time? The trophy, the ring?
Well let's see, three veteran retired players, one already coming back from retirement, one announcing his comeback yet is not sure who or what team will take his comeback seriously, and one who we are still awaiting his announcement of a comeback. Last season the NBA seemed a little on the boring side. The Celtics had one of the worst season records. Television ratings were down for the playoffs and the finals. Shaq and Dwyane Wade had injuries that resulted in Miami not bringing in the heat, and Kobe Bryant's drama of not wanting to be traded, wanting to be traded, not wanting to be traded again, really wanting to be traded, well it just wasn't that interesting to the NBA fanatics. So will this season be of much interest when some retired veteran players make a comeback?
YES!!! I think NBA needs this. Even though some might state the ages of these veterans will result in the lack of running and even playing strong defense/ offense with the younger players, a veteran is a veteran, and if their body and heart is in the game, they will succeed. These guys know the game inside out and one of the best talents they have is showing these new jacks what the game of basketball is all about. I mean with the Celtics picking up Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and having Paul Pierce together in one team with the possibility of having Reggie Miller as well, this will be a guaranteed exciting and very interesting season for Boston and the NBA. With Hardaway playing with Miami along side Wade, Alonzo Mourning, and Shaq, these three players can only bring more heat to Miami. Houston, if he comes back with the skills he had before he was forced to retire, if his body is up to the challenge, whichever team picks him up will be satisfied. When Houston was good, he was phenomenal. If he can bring that same game back, the NBA will be leaning back to the days of Jordan, Bird, and Bill Russell. Real game, Real Hustle.
Anyone calling on Ewing to comeback?????
